During the quarter ending June 30 the College received payments on pledges to the Third Century Fund of $386,175, leaving only about $8 million left to be paid. In addition, the following gifts of $5,000 and over were received over and above the Alumni Fund. During this period Dartmouth also received $169,444 in gifts of less than $5,000. The purpose-of this column is to recognize these generous gifts and to indicate the variety of ways in which support for the College can be expressed.

Gifts from Alumni & Friends

WILLIAM H. MORTON 1932: $100,000 toward the Ice Arena fund.

MRS. FERNALD R. WHITE, daughter of Lemuel G. Hodgkins 1900: $4,997 addition to a scholarship fund in his name.

CARLETON BLUNT 1926: $500,000 toward the Ice Arena and $150,000 addition to the John E. Blunt III 1922 Memorial Fund.

DR. IRVING M. LEVITAS 1929: $13,374 to establish the Levitas Fund for scholarships.

MRS. HELEN S. LOWELL, widow of James R. Lowell 1910: $5,000 to establish a book fund in his name.

CHESTER F. MCSPADDEN, parent 1952, 1957: $6,039 addition to the McSpadden Public Affairs Internships Fund.

FRIEND OF THE COLLEGE: $24,812 addition to the Class of 1930 Faculty Fund.

JAMES H. ORR, friend of the College: $19,775 to establish the David Orr Memorial Lectureship in Culture and Religion, in memory of his son.

Grants from Foundations

Louis D. BEAUMONT FOUNDATION: $5,000 for support of the Urban Education Program of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation.

COGAR FOUNDATION, INC.: $8,220 for support of a scholarship in technology and

public policy. CHARLES HAYDEN FOUNDATION: $7,500 for support of the Urban Education Program.

ERNEST & MARY HAYWARD WEIR FOUNDATION: $9,093 to the Dartmouth Medical School to support the Summer Bridge Program.

CHARLES BUTCHER FOUNDATION: $14,372 to establish the Charles Butcher Poetry Fund with income to be used to bring poets to the campus to read their poetry.

"THE FAIRCHILD FOUNDATION: $300,000 toward a pledge of $3 million for the Fairchild Center, science building now under construction.

EVELYN A. JAFFE CHARITABLE TRUST: $50,000 addition to the Evelyn Friede Jaffe (1958, 1960, 1963) Hopkins Center Fund for the purchase of African art.

ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION: $500,000 to assist in the changeover to yearround operation.

RICHARD K. MELLON CHARITABLE TRUSTS: $50,000 as the first half of a grant for use in the Urban Studies Program.

Gifts Subject to Life Income

DR. JOHN L. NORRIS 1925: $15,647 addition to the John L. 1925 & Beatrice Norris Fund for the support of student projects at the Medical School.

MR. & MRS. FRANKLIN F. DOTEN 1923: $50,838 addition to the Franklin Ford Doten 1923 & Gladys Poor Doten Fund for the Alumni Fund.

CHARLES L. HARDY 1927: $6,500 to establish the Charles L. 1927 and Helen P. Hardy Fund for general purposes.

EDWIN HAWKRIDGE 1942: $10,850 to establish a fund in his name for general purposes.

MR. & MRS. RICHARD W. BLACK 1929: $68,911 addition to the Richard W. 1929 & Kathryn Glasford Black Fund for Medical School scholarships.

JOHN H. DANIELL 1924: $8,314 to establish the John H. 1924 and Pauline Daniell Fund for general purposes.

ROLFE M. HARVEY 1927: $16,005 to establish the Rolfe M. 1927 and Vera E. Harvey Fund for the Alumni Fund.

LEE R. MACHALE 1915: $40,093 addition to the Anne Jane MacHale 1915 Gift Fund for unrestricted purposes, bringing the total of this Fund to $88,806.

MR. & MRS. KENNETH C. QUENCER 1923: $70,627 to establish two Kenneth C. 1923 and Jeannette C. Quencer Funds for general purposes.

CARL E. RUGEN 1933: $11,336 to establish the Carl E. 1933 and Janet M. Rugen Fund for general purposes.

RUEL S. SMITH 1923: $18,275 to establish three additional Ruel S. 1923 and Margaret Trotta Smith Funds, unrestricted.

GORDON K. WENTWORTH 1940: $26,462 to establish the Wentworth General Fund 1940 for general purposes.

Estate of PAUL M. BATCHELDER 1908: $10,000 to establish a fund in his name in support of the Alumni Fund.

Trust estate of ORVIL W. SMITH 1903: $5,964 addition to a fund in his name for general purposes, bringing the total to $65,844.

Estate of WILLIAM M. BODWELL 1906: $7,000 addition to a fund to be used in any way the President sees fit.

Estate of ELEANOR E. HOAG, a long-time employee of the College: $12,077 to the Dartmouth Medical School for use as the Dean sees fit.

Estate of CHANNING COX 1901: $50,000 addition to a fund in his name for general purposes, bringing the total to $1,368,692.93.

Trust Estate of EDWIN B. JUDD 1911: $59,064.62 to establish a scholarship fund in his name.

Estate of HAROLD L. NILES 1907: $15,000 to establish a scholarship fund in his name.

Estate of RALPH S. PEASE 1908: $11,221.31 to establish a fund in his name, unrestricted.

Estates of CHARLES W. 1918 and MARGARET R. ISBELL: $143,000 to establish the Charles W. Isbell 1918 Scholarship.

Estate of JOHN C. REARDON 1936: $5,050 to establish the Joseph A. and Lena F. Reardon (1936) Memorial Fund, unrestricted, in honor of his parents.

Grants from Corporations

FIRST NATIONAL CITY BANK NEW YORK FOUNDATION: $5,000 for the Tuck Associates Program.

OWENS-ILLINOIS, INC.: $20,000 for the Thayer Partners Program.

GULF OIL FOUNDATION: $5,000 for Tuck Gulf Research & Development Fellowship.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGES FUND: $47,134 unrestricted, as Dartmouth's share of gifts to the Fund from corporations.
