Dartmouth's cross country team had a 5-3 record last year and again has taken advantage of a September training period at the College Grant in northern New Hampshire to prepare for the season already well under way. Captain Tom Shiland is the leader of the Green runners who have hopes of improving on last fall's fifth-place effort in the Heptagonal championship meet on November 3 in New York City.

Two standout performers for Dartmouth championship football teams have joined the Green coaching staff. All-Ivy halfback John Short, the Ivy scoring champion in 1970, and Joe Leslie, the All-East and All-Ivy offensive tackle in 1971, are serving as interim assistant coaches with the Dartmouth freshman team this fall.

They replace Denny Brown, frosh backfield coach who returned to his alma mater, the University of Michigan, in August as head freshman coach. A permanent replacement for Brown will be selected following the season.

Dartmouth football on radio: For the eighth year in a row, the Beacon Network will provide radio coverage of Dartmouth football via a network of more than 20 stations throughout New England. The network originates with WCRB-Radio in Boston. Local listings provide specific station coverage information. The broadcast team on the Beacon Network this fall includes a new play-by-play man, Ron Cantera, who has been color commentator for the Boston Bruins as well as sports information director at Harvard prior to beginning his own broadcasting-public relations venture this fall. Steve Meterparel '52 is the producer and color commentator on the Beacon broadcasts.

Dartmouth will also gain periodic exposure to the New York radio audience this fall via the Ivy Game of the Week which will be carried again by WQXR-Radio, and be sponsored by Newsweek. The selection of games is made on a weekly basis as the Ivy title picture develops.

The Dartmouth-Harvard game on October 28 is tentatively listed as an ABC-TV regional telecast but the broadcast map may be limited to the New England states only.
