Any of you who have visited Hanover since the completion of the Leverone Field House and wondered about that massive dirt floor therein must have noted in this media that it is now covered with Astroturf (Monsanta). This surfacing project has been a great need due to the many indoor uses of the building including mass feeding of giant groups like the luncheons for all classes at reunion times. A major portion of the funding for this installation was made available through a gift from Vin Turecamo who has long been a devotee of various athletic teams there as well as steering promising young athletes Dartmouth's way. Director of Athletics Seaver Peters says, "The addition of this synthetic surface will give Dartmouth one of the finest indoor athletic facilities in the nation."
We have a series of brief notes left over from last spring and summer. Bob Sullivan's nephew (brother '31) Dave is a member of the hockey team. The Art Tuckers with two other couples chartered a 40-foot sailboat for a two-week cruise in the Caribbean. Edith and Bill Bwyer have both had more than their share of illness in recent years but we must say Bill appears trim as an eagle and very dedicated to his job as president of the Massachusetts Community Colleges. His headquarters is in the old Boston Grain Exchange building which has been completely remodeled into modern office space while maintaining the original and unique building shell.
Dr. Brad Varnum, whose home in Chelmsford, Mass., was largely destroyed by vandal arsonists two years ago is still fighting his insurance company and to date has had nothing but red tape with no payment. He is now in a medical group, common these days, in that area. Ed Stern's son who was refused Dartmouth admission is number 3 man in his class at Wharton Business School. Jack Kenney, of tennis teaching fame in Franconia, N. H., became involved in weekly trips to Boston's Roxbury area running a tennis clinic for disadvantaged kids there. The Ernie April family is sure education minded. Ernie teaches, Dot's a Ph.D., one son teaches at Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons and the other attends B.C. while working part time for IBM.
Sterl Atwater travels New England as a manufacturer's rep in the steel business. Wes Wallenius has had a serious bout with emphysema and who was last known to be in a hospital north of Boston. We hope he may now have it under control. Jack Williams tells us his Vernon, Vt., dairy farm is his smallest since he sold off property to the nuclear plant installation. He has two other locations in Putney and Westminster plus adding 200 more head and a big barn this year. He sells milk to H. P. Hood in Agawam mainly but says Connecticut buyers pay more money. Ralph Griffith has been with AAA in Cranston, R. I., since the bottom fell out of the jewelry business. Wife Kay is with St. Joseph's Hospital as assistant dietician and therapeutics saying with three boys all in college it's a tough row to hoe.
Some years ago when we visited Katieand Larry Brooks in Annisquam we got over to the beach across the river in his boat (with oars). This year he said we should come for a visit and ride across in his 33-foot Pacemaker (without oars). Our summer vanished too fast so maybe next year. We also missed out on an invitation to attend an ' open house celebrating the completion of Charley Collis' new Princess House office and plant facilities in Dighton, Mass., in August. As mentioned here last month much of our mobility problem was Katie's broken ankle which is now in transit to hopeful health via therapy.
Jim Otis resigned his side job of the municipal credit union while continuing his teaching field. With all kids now ex-school the pressure is off. Ed Kelley has quit the fishing business altogether. He was doing plumbing contracting work but has more recently joined the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations in Mobile. Gene Jones moved to Boston from his Weston home but continues with his Framingham Acceptance Company based in Ashland, Mass. Retired Army Colonel Dan Minahan is with the University of Michigan Highway Safety Research Institute. Tom Duff is with the Montclair State College in New Jersey. Civil engineer Dave Mann is in County Flood Control and Water Conservation work in Riverside, Calif.
