More on our notes "hung-over" from reunion. Alex Mackenzie is with Hammel, Riglander & Co. in New York City as director of purchasing of raw and semi completed materials. They manufacture jewelry-making tools coming under the heading of a microelectronics industry. Strangely enough, Alex tells us his hobby is tools." Phil Swain engineered a combination trip to make reunion. As a member of the Seattle school board he attended a meeting of the National School Board Association in Saratoga and visited his mother, newly turned 88.
Dr. Bill Mauran has established an adolescent clinic in Providence, R. I. As this nation's young people continue to proliferate their problems and life-styles, many cities are finding such clinics the only helpful answer to the complexities created. Bill's is staffed in all major areas—drugs, unwed mothers, psychiatry, psychology, etc., but complains the bulk of their work can be only of advisory nature, thus limiting full effectiveness. His dedication is obvious; ask him a question and he will produce facts and examples you will have trouble believing but all true.
Bob Terwilliger sold his jewelry store in Hartford seven years ago. At the time he was reluctant but it was a good deal. He and Betty are out-door people. They hike, bowl, play lots of golf, but essentially they have adjusted to retired life and now find it most attractive. Bill Spears, long time writer of technical manuals, now works in Washington, D. C. Lses Barrett was not sure he would make reunion due to an eye operation for cataracts. But you know Les! Cele did the driving and even helped steer him around town some as he tried to become accustomed to those new thick-lens glasses. Les explained to us at breakfast that until you get used to them you are apt to miss the coffee cup and pour the cream on the table. He's doing fine and the life of the party as usual.
Jane and Bill Brown continue to narrow down the field of "children still at home." A daughter at college in Sherman, Texas, and their son at UMass. Someone asked about Bill Newburger, the answer being he's still alive and well, etc., and a buyer for G. Fox Department Store in Hartford. Connie and Bill Sayre signed up for fall reunion. He sees Bill Dixon around Montclair. He also promised to write details of Ben Doran being head of some trade association—maybe this will smoke it out. Last August the Sayres took their two college-age youngsters to spend a week in London plus four more touring England and Scotland by car.
Pat Uhlmann almost broke up the general alumni meeting with President Kemeny in the Hopkins Center auditorium. During the question and answer period he stood up to suggest facetiously a motto for the Bequest Program—'"When you kick off, Dartmouth will receive." His son Bob graduated this year, so Pat had practically a whole week in Hanover. Other sons graduated were those of Steve Cochrane,George Zeiss, Tony Turkevich (magna cum laude and heading for Cambridge, England, on a science fellowship), BriggsAustin (Peace Corps in the Nepal moun- tains), Bob Aylward, and Roily Kent.
By now all should have received the joint letter from Ronny Brown and DaveCamerer in reference to the GordonBennett Memorial. This was proposed and enthusiastically received at our reunion class dinner. It will be in the form of a freshman football scoreboard at Chase Field with a bronze plaque in Benny's name suitably mounted at the site. At this writing both are to be dedicated between halves at the Yale-Dartmouth freshman game October 30. The solicitation letter went to all members of Palaeopitus, Green Key, Deke, C. & G., and all hockey and football squad members of these organizations during Benny's years. For any who read this and were not contacted or would like to contribute you can make out a check to Dartmouth College—Bennett Fund and send it to Allan M. Herrick, 101 Crosby Hall, Hanover, New Hampshire 03755. The total commitment will run in excess of $3000 and it is hoped that spontaneous contributions will cover the costs.
Next month we will report on the October 8/9 fall reunion. This is growing larger each year, five new couples signed up for the weekend, and the real problem gets to be where to stay unless you sign up well in advance—like a year ahead!
