Together with the other full-time campus ministries at Dartmouth (Episcopal, Roman Catholic, and United Church of Christ) the Lutheran Chapel of Our Savior, adjacent to Leverone Field House, conducts an active student program that seeks to undergird the knowledge and skills acquired with a college education by providing opportunity for religious growth and expression.
The number of students participating in the worship and other programs of the Chapel has steadily increased to the point where the present church structure is inadequate for an effective campus ministry. Dartmouth alumni, students, and faculty have therefore joined with members of the congregation in planning the enlargement and renovation of the Lutheran student center and chapel.
John M. Haffenreffer '44 is the general chairman of the Dartmouth Alumni Committee Council for the Chapel of Our Savior. Douglas D. Perkins '53, Samuel H. Snow '40, and Robert G. Smith '44 are helping coordinate the committee's work. Other members of the committee are Andrew P. Schmidt '36, Roland R. Hummel '42, Allen E. Howland '44, Dwight H. Ketelhut '54, Edward Olney '58, Ronald J. Kley '60, John E. Schlachtenhaufen '61, Paul S. Stageberg '68, and David L. Rutlen '69. Members of the Council together with students and congregation members have met frequently to plan the building needs and program of the Chapel.
The facilities designed by the firm of Roy Banwell, a member of the Art Department faculty at Dartmouth, will provide a new and larger worship area that will be flexible for student oriented services, and also extensive renovation and remodeling for a student center. A library, lounge, education and meeting rooms, and recreation facilities are also included. The estimated cost is $295,000. Some of the money will come from the church, but required also are gifts from Dartmouth alumni, parents of students, friends of the College, and other persons who are concerned about the spiritual growth of students.
A brochure outlining the ministry and building plans of the Chapel is available. To receive a copy or any further information you may write to The Rev. John Lemkul, Chapel of Our Savior, 5 Summer Street, Hanover, N. H. 03755 or to any member of the Alumni Committee Council.
