On the mid-October weekend when Dartmouth played its first Ivy League football game of the year and impressively defeated Princeton, 1925 held its annual fall reunion and executive committee meeting in Hanover. It was the largest of these gatherings we have ever had, with 37 present at the meeting, at least a dozen others in town, and an attendance of 79 at the Friday night dinner in Alumni Hall of Hopkins Center which was the first event on the program.
On Saturday morning the more or less formal meeting was held in Reed Hall a little early in order to permit subsequent attendance at the general meeting at which President Kemeny spoke and answered questions. This was followed by a class luncheon at the Tavern Room of the Inn in plenty of time for the kick-off. Dinner that night, again in Alumni Hall, concluded our group activities most pleasantly.
Present at the meeting were Charlie Moore, Herb Talbot, Frank Kennedy, Frank Wallis, Ed Ober, Bud Neilson, Art Smith, Ed Burns, Don Hunt, Fred Webster, Lane Goss, Bob McKennan, Ralph Udall, Paul Reber, Bill Boies, Frank Shea, Jack Spring, Larry Leavitt, Bill Jenkins, Pete Haffenreffer, Bud Petrequin, Ford Whelden, Ike Burner, Milt Emerson, Eddie Roessler, Doug Archibald, Rad Tanzer, John Tagney, Coop Rhodes, Ralph Tucker, Mott Garlock, George Zahm, Ross Beatty, Eddie Blake, Horton Conrad, Bob Meginnity and Phil O'Connell.
In addition, the following were in town and present at one event or another: Howard Megee, Bob Weinig, Bill Sleigh, Tom Carpenter, Jack Norris, Francis Brown, Ken Sullivan, Allen Bickford, Paul Deisroth, Lang Spring, Bill Bunting and Mrs. Edward Hewitt. Doubtless others were there but unrecorded and to them we apologize.
At the meeting Lane Goss, treasurer, reported a surplus total of $4,342 as of August 1, 1972 after transfer during the year of $2,000 to the Memorial Book Fund.
George Zahm, Alumni Fund agent stated that we had 316 contributors this year with 42 increases and 43 decreases. One hundred and sixty-four men gave the same amount as last year, there were ten new contributors and 22 who had given last year but did not in 1972. The Class was still slightly under the quota assigned but we have achieved a slightly increasing percentage of quota each of the last three years. Larry Leavitt reported that 66 widows of classmates receive the Alumni Magazine and that 48 gave to the Fund this year.
Ford Whelden, Bequest Chairman, informed the meeting that during the 1971-1972 year over four million dollars was added to this program for the entire College and that just under one million dollars of this was credited to 1925. The total for our Class as of June 30, 1972 was $4,514,154. 1925 ranks fifth in total giving through all channels, among all classes in the history of the College.
The weekend including Saturday, October 13, the date for the Penn game, was chosen for the gathering next fall.
The Class voted to approve the expenditure of $112 for a gift to Jim McFate, honorary class member, on the occasion of his retirement as manager of the Hanover Inn.
Having in mind the probability of some increased expenses for our 50th Reunion, and considering the dues level in many classes in our age group, the class voted to increase the annual dues from $8 to $l0.
Pete Haffenreffer has extended to the Class an invitation for an interim reunion to discuss plans for our 50th. It will be held at his Mt. Hope, R. I., farm next June, probably either the 16th or the 23rd, both being Saturdays.
Bob Borwell had to miss the gathering because of a recent operation. He is reported to be recovering satisfactorily but was not yet quite ready to do any traveling.
Those who watched the Russia-Canada hockey games in Canada via television may have recognized one of the reporters as Johnny Peirson, former Boston Bruins star and son-in-law of Don Hunt.
On behalf of their schoolmates, twoyoungsters who attend the Oak Park andRiver Forest (Ill.) Day Nursery give ascroll to Robert Borwell '25, who endowed the school's new playground. Atleft is Mrs. Borwell.
