Earl W. Byrd, director of the Educational Opportunity Fund Program at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, has been named director of the Dartmouth-Jersey City Program and Learning Center. He succeeds Michael Bailin '64, director for the past three years, who is resigning to enter law practice in Manchester, N. H.
Mr. Byrd has taught in elementary and secondary schools in Jersey City. From 1965 to 1969 he was with the city's Can Do program, as assistant director and then director of the development and funding of its antipoverty programs. In community affairs he has been chairman of the local CORE chapter, vice chairman of the city's Civil Rights Commission, and a city youth coordinator.
Mr. Byrd will direct the work of Tucker Foundation interns who act as teacher-tutors in Jersey City schools and evening programs and offer adult education programs. This year more than 60 Dartmouth undergraduates will have earned a term of academic credit as resident interns
