The crowning moment of a fine tennis season came on a Sunday afternoon, in mid-May and Lloyd Ucko marked Mother's Day by giving Dartmouth its first New England singles champion since Charlie Hoeveler won in 1967. In the process, Dartmouth also put together a display of overall team balance that netted the Green a tie for the New England team championship with Harvard.

The New England title plus an 11-7 record in the regular action marks the high point of Coach John Kenfield's six seasons at Dartmouth.

Ucko, who has been a superb lefthander at the top of Kenfield's ladder this spring, trimmed Dave Miller of Brown, 6-7, 7-5, 6-0, for the New England title. The senior from Packanack Lake. N. J., capped a career at Dartmouth with a strong singles showing after teaming with Brian Williams, his co-captain and classmate, during the past two seasons as a fine doubles player.

The balance of the Dartmouth lineup showed through in the New England event at Amherst College as the Green had representatives in the finals of three singles matches and two doubles events. Williams lost in the "B" division finals and sophomore Rick Woolworth was beaten in the "C" division final. At the same time, freshman Andy Oldenburg and junior Mark Harty came up with wins in the "B" and "C" consolation finals.

The regular season record included a 4-5 standing in the Eastern League, the best effort in that strong circuit since 1967.
