Ken Clark soliloquises on what Dartmouth meant to him over the years with this letter to your secretary: "Lest We Forget. Dr. Tucker has said 'ln the midst of the changes in the general influence of a college upon its students through changes in educational policy one element in college life remains constant—the element of comradeship. Comradeship is more than ordinary comradeship. It represents that sense of security and trust which is born out of well-tried friendship.' When I think of Dartmouth, I seldom think of any particular discipline or event. I do think, however of Dave Swain, with whom I roomed at the time of the fire in South Fayerweather. We were in close touch throughout his life. I think of that loveable character, Josh Clark, another of my wedding party and of Ted Stafford with whom (and his remarkable wife, Marie Peary) I lived in Washington during my stint on the War Contracts Board. I think of Nat Burleigh who was a big man in Washington during the War and of Les Hawkridge and Brad Patten two very special warmhearted friends of superior intellect. Then, too, among many others I do want to pay tribute to those stalwarts Warren Aery, Sid Backus, Gabe Farrell, Jim Mathes, George Morris and John Sterling to whom someone referred recently as 'that great and good Man' All of these wonderful comrades in 1911 are gone and what a void their passing has left; but to have been able to share the totality of their spirit, vision, wisdom, and wit is something for which I, at least, shall always be grateful."
Ken Ballou passed away on December 22, 1972. Memorial contributions may be sent to the New England Deaconess Association, Concord, Mass. An obituary will appear in this or a later issue of the Alumni Magazine.
Polly Clark wrote on a Christmas card saying that Dick Paul's widow passed away on December 10, 1972 in Huntington Beach, Calif.
McGregor Hamilton says he left Dartmouth our freshman year because there were no girls there, thus ante-dating the modern swing to coeducation by 65 years.
John Pearson checks in with: Thanks tor your birthday greeting. What a superb secretary you are. I have just finished reading the Alumni Magazine." Ralph Blanchard reports that he still carries that burden which afflicts so many of us—arthritis, but philosophically observes that life goes on quite simply, as indeed it does.
Sherwood and Marion Trask expected to take over their new apartment by mid- November—Aldersgate Retirement Center, Orange City, Fla. 32763. It sounds wonderful. We wish them much happiness and a long, long tenancy.
Ken Clark writes that Sarge Eaton and his daughter Betty are both directors of the Bridgeport Savings Bank and attend meetings together. Esther gets a boot out of this. Ken wonders how Chuck Bush and your secretary rate Massachusetts after the election: most advanced or most retarded or merely a condition? (Your secretary says "Have Fun" while you can). Ken saw Marian Agry and Kay Sterling at the Yale debacle.
Willard and Dorothy Gooding planned to visit their son in Greensboro, N. C., last fall. They expect a daughter from Richmond, Va., to come up and help them with Christmas remembrances for the 25 members of their clan. They ramble about the Maine and New Hampshire seacoast in their little car. They are doing all right.
Durch Irwin writes that there is not much news in a restricted area. Their feathered menagerie is a big deal there. They started with four swans—lost two to three wild dogs; added four ducks—lost one to a fox; and someone donated four wingclipped Canadian geese which have survived.
Received a nice note on a Christmas card from Vail Applegate. He does housework like myself and Windy Winship.
Many classmates and widows sent cards to the president and secretary bearing good wishes for the Christmas season and the New Year.
Ramah Nead, wife of Ray, came home last November quite improved after hospital visits in August.
Ruth Backus and Mary Chase represented 1911 at the funeral services of Ken Ballou in Concord, Mass., on last December 28.
Our next notes will be coming to you in the winds of March.
