Led by Captain Steve Morelli, a 150-pounder, and Chuck Estin, one of the top 177-pound performers in New England, Dartmouth's wrestlers built an 8-6-1 record with two matches remaining before the New England intercollegiate tournament.
Morelli and Estin have dominated their events this season (as they did last year). Morelli had a 10-1-2 record, while Estin, who also works at. 190 pounds, is unbeaten in 12 matches and has won 11 by pins and the other by forfeit.
A couple of Coach Jerry Berndt's frosh football captains during the past two years, Jim Conterato and Reggie Williams, have also proven themselves to be imposing obstacles in the heavyweight event, demonstrating why they are both quality linebackers during the fall season. Both are strong, quick and agile.
With veteran Rick Woolworth and freshman Scott McCallister holding the top two positions, Coach John Kenfield's squash team bounced back after dropping five straight matches (four in the Ivy League and another to Army, that one and the Yale match by 5-4 scores) to defeat Bowdoin and Wesleyan.
The Green could produce a break-even record as it headed to the intercollegiate tournament but the final match, with Cornell, promised to be a tough one at Ithaca as Kenfield's team battled to avoid the bottom of the Ivy League ladder.
Heading toward a final dual meet at Brown and then the Heptagonal meet at Cornell, Dartmouth's track team had a 6-1 record featuring a well-earned 75-43 victory over Yale, a team that had battled the Green to a 59-59 tie last year.
The frosh sprinters, Rich Berryman and Greg Payne, continued to improve but the big noise came on January 27 when sophomore Jim Robinson from Cohoes, N.Y., broke one of Dartmouth's longest standing records.
Ironically, in setting a Dartmouth mark for the mile run at 4:09.6, Robinson had to settle for second place behind Boston College's John McDonald who won in 4:09 flat.
Robinson's effort surpassed the record of 4:10.6 set in 1942 by Don Burnham '44, regarded as Dartmouth's finest miler and the national collegiate champion in 1943.
Four days later, Robinson was the anchor man on another Dartmouth record performance. He teamed with Ed Spinney, Haynes Lund, and Larry Krol for a twomile relay mark of 7:42.3, more than seven seconds better than the mark set in 1970.
In gymnastics, Ken Jones' team continues to show improvement as it develops depth. Junior Mike Pancoe remains one of New England's finest performers on the rings (he has yet to be beaten).
