he February 21 meeting of the Sarasota Dart- mouth Club, held at the Holiday Inn, Lido Beach, was a tremendous success with over 80 present.
Professor Harold Bond '42 gave the address. He seemed nappy with the coeds; they are good students and tend to keep up with the boys.
In our group of old timers were: Bob and EdnaFalconer '05, Roger and Jane Brown '05, Wilbur and Eunice Bull '09, Norman and Alice Gordon '23 (who are planning to attend their 50th Reunion this June), and Fred and Grace Smith of New Hampton (N.H.) Prep School who have two Dartmouth sons.
Jim McFate, long-time manager of the Hanover Inn, now retired, was a welcome guest. A few days later I was driving along Route 41 in Sarasota and I spotted the McFate car with the N.H. license plate, "Beth," ahead of me when we stopped at a light. They turned off at Morrison's Cafeteria where they serve the best roast beef, almost as good as Jim served for so many years at the Inn.
Others attending were Hugh and Charlotte Ford Morrison '26. Charlotte was a classmate with Marion Tuck at Simmons College, Class of 1918, widow of John Tuck'05. The Falconers called on Marion in Ormond Beach on their way north. She has a beautiful condominium with a view of the Atlantic Ocean and she entertained Bob and Edna at a beautiful country club. Before coming to the Sarasota Club luncheon, the Falconers had lunch at Dunedin with Fred Chase, and in St. Petersburg they talked to C. C. Hills. I talked to Bob March 7 and he said they enjoyed their trip, but were glad to get home to Tyron.
Our Alumni Fund for the year is coming along extra well. By the time you are reading these notes, I am sure we will have received over $2,500.
I talked on the telephone to C.C. Hills in early March. He has been slowed up a little by the bug that got most of us recently. His daughter Mary, who lives in Miami, called to tell C.C. that her thoroughbred dog had eight puppies. Three are already sold at a good price.
A note from Fred Chase says, "There are three oldsters left now of my old Hanover crowd, Ethel Lillard was 90 in December, 1972, Emily Emerson Day was 90 in January, and I will be 90 in April, all three within a five month period and all near neighbors in our youthful years. I think this story of our group who have kept in touch with each other speaks well for the wholesome lives our parents lived in Hanover and the inheritance of long lives we evidently received from them. We all had and have many happy memories of each other."
Hawley B. Chase of the Class of 1899, died February 12. He was born June 12, 1877, in Newport, N.H. We all called him Howie and up to last year he had been a regular attendant at Commencement. A few days ago I sent a 95 year birthday card to Paul Osgood '99. He is now the only living '99 man and resides in Somerville, Mass. I talked to him on the phone in December and he was quite cheerful.
Birthdays: May 21, John Bell, 90; July 21, Harry Lill, 93; and September 6, Ernest White, 90.
