'34 up! - and on to Hanover.For the Fabulous Fortieth.June 10-13.
For the above reason, it was my fond hope that this last pre-Reunion column might be chockful 'o news about many a world-roaming, granite-brained classmate not recently mentioned in this space. But once again, as faithful readers of the 1934 News Letter know so well, Bill "Magnet" Scherman has glommed on to virtually every jot and tittle of available info.
All's I got for us this time, therefore, is much akin to the widow's mite - appreciated, sure, but not too nourishing. Thanks to Jake Jacobson, the honest (real estate) broker between Scherm and me, I'm privileged at least to lead off with a communique from Dr. Stan Bloomfield. Stan writes: "We are living in Chapel Hill where the University of North Carolina is located, and I personally am considering joining the 'streakers.' I hope that shall be able to attend the Reunion this June. Stan goes on to report that after a career in the private practice of pediatrics in Lowell Mass, he is now connected with the Medical Department of Burroughs Wellsome Company pharmaceutics, presently located in North Carolina Stan's son was graduated from Dartmouth with the Class of 1973 and is now completing his first year at Duke Medical School.
Jake also passes on very recent (April 8) word from Buz Hartman in Highland Park, Ill., where he's associated with Leath & Company, home furnishings. Buz reports that he won't be able to join the rest of us at Reunion because he and wife Barbara have what one might call a prior commitment: the marriage of their eldest daughter Martha to Jim Gray on June 9. The Hartmans' son Steve, a lieutenant in the Air Corps, will be flying in from Arizona with his wife Sue for the big event. Daughter Barbara Ann, who has been studying the acting art under famed Lee Strasburg, is now touring with "Camelot" in the role of Guinevere, and celebrated her 21st birthday in Kansas City, en famille, after her May 4 performance.
Clarence Davies, our own model of a modern major-general, made news back last February 20 (I've just found out) in America's Older College Newspaper, The Dartmouth. Under a headline of "ROTC Revival Considered," the story asserted that "The Ad Hoc Committee established by the Trustees to 'thoroughly review' the possibilities of reestablishing ROTC facilities at the College met for the first time last Sunday evening (2/17)." Among the 12 permanent members of the Committee, chaired by Professor of Government Gene M. Lyons, is "J. Clarence Davies '34."
To which, Bill Ramsey - president of American Savings Company of Omaha — adds a pertinent update. Writing to Scherm about Clarence's March 8 retirement from the USAF. Ramsey says:
"One bright, sunny, spring afternoon, Koppy and I saluted our way through SAC gates and ended up sitting beside the reviewing stand, craning our necks trying to find out what Clarence Davies looked like. We sat next to a high-ranking chaplain who pointed out who was who and what was what. We admired the band, we admired the honor guard in their blue berets and bulbous black boots with crossed white shoelaces, and finally identified Clarence, whom I hadn't seen since schooldays and somehow had visualized as looking entirely different. Later, we met at the Officers' Club down the hill from the Headquarters Building where we listened to a lieutenant-general expand on what a great guy Clarence was, complimenting him on still having a crew haircut, ft really was a great tribute to Clarence - apparently the only time a reservist had been so honored."
And that's the news for April. Reading this in May, please note it's not too late, even now, to (1) decide to attend Reunion if that wasn't already in your plans: and (2) dispatch your once-in-lifetime, Fortieth Reunion Anniver- sary Gift to the Alumni Fund. See you in June!
