"This is the winter of our discontent . . (Write me if you recognize the quotation.) Spring doesn't come until March 21 . . . but Hanover is full of paradoxes: bulbs are up on the south side of my house, inches away from a foot or more of snow; thaws that only make roads icy, roofs (mine) leak, when another "cold wave" hits. Now (March 3) it's snowing as a storm from the south sweeps up with moist air. Our only complaint—the "mud season" is largely in your memories ... no "duck boards"—is to have you write from warm climes: Frankand Louise from St. Christopher; Buttsand Harriet Lamson doing a double take—leaving for Florida today for three weeks, then home and a later trip to Bermuda (where our Larry Fishbein lives no longer); the Larry Kugelmans off for Florida, too. And others, "too numerous to mention," as the auction ads say. By contrast, Margaret and I have had to cancel regretfully plans for a leisurely drive down the coast, with visits with several classmates planned, ending up in Florida or thereabouts where several of you are holed up. Charlie and Mary Belle Wood have a Shangri La, so far not over-run by "tourists." Enough!
Last weekend, a delightful back-and-forth visit with Spud and Kay Spaulding. Next known visiting classmates come for Class Officers' weekend—April 30-May 1. Meanwhile I'm delighted with several pleasant notes in response to the birthday cards. Stew Eldredge, take another bow; we all like this second card you've given the Class. I shall have comments but will reserve them for the Class Letter, as they are more personal-to-the-class than of interest outside our class notes. (It may or may not surprise you how many non-'24s read these notes . . . and vice versa.) I'm also hoping to have a page of pictures; being retired, as many of you know, does not mean time hangs heavy on your hands.
A few brief items: Ken Foley (he and Ina are returning from Florida golfing, etc.) sold his Dartmouth Printing Co. to two firms together: the Hanover Computer Environment Corp. (educational) and South Shore Publishing Co., of N. Scituate to operate as a subsidiary of South Shore with a local manager; Larry Hewes, who missed the Princeton game here last fall due to our crazy flying weather, has finished his report on Tanzania for the United Nations, based on his study there; Wales (Hobey) Baker "reactivates" as a psychological counselor out in Santa Barbara; see Class Letter for more about our Class Song and author Ick Sloane; DickPerry, from nearby Charlestown, has his own insurance agency there . . . regretfully to both we never seem to meet; "Mrs. Elisabeth Rae-Lamont" was given some very good publicity in the Yonkers (NY) paper ... as "a housewife who doubles as a culinary 'truant officer' for diet drop-outs" ... a frequent speaker at Westchester women's clubs she is also wife of classmate Louis Lamont, "former Dartmouth quarterback who plays up to four sets of tennis on a Friday night." There's a long story to save for the Letter; space here gets increasingly tight each year.
But one further note: we are now "up-to-date" on securing Memorial Books for classmates who have left us; I hope to have a full list printed for the record and your information. A wonderful letter from Arline Jackson, which I hope to share in part; it will indicate some of the problems in trying to select Memorial Books.
