At this early date, John Kenfield's tennis team has done about as expected. The Green posted a 3-4 record during the southern trip and then fell victim, as expected, to two of the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association's better teams this spring, Navy and Penn.

That's where it stands at this point, a 3-6 record that should turn around as the team led by Co-Captains Bill Kellogg (the top singles player) and Mark Harty (who plays at the fifth spot) prepare for the home season to begin.

Dartmouth's wins during the spring trip were over Stetson, The Citadel, and North Carolina State. The losses were at Jacksonville, Furman (both by 5-4 scores), Davidson, and Virginia.

The win at NC State (where Kenfield coached before coming to Dartmouth seven seasons ago), was a great one for the Green. "We were down 4-2 after the singles and then swept the doubles matches," said Kenfield. "I didn't see any way that we'd win them all."

But doubles play has been one of Dartmouth's greatest strengths in recent seasons and it looks like more of the same this spring. Kellogg and sophomore Andy Oldenburg are the top doubles tandem while Kevin Chee and Harty have been a most able second unit. Rick Woolworth and Rob Tesar (a freshman who replaces sixth singles entry Jim Myers in the doubles) are the third pair.
