It's fall, and there's football. The last Saturday of the month, the Harvard game takes place in Hanover for the first time in many years. 1951 will be having a mini-reunion that Saturday. By now a mailing has been sent to classmates in the Northeast. Anyone from elsewhere in the country who expects to be in Hanover for the Harvard game should contact Charlie Breed, Alumni Fund executive secretary, for a copy of the mailing.

As you undoubtedly know by now, the Alumni Fund went over the top, Under the able leadership of Dick Dutton and Ed Weisenfeld, our class agents improved 195 l's contribution to that achievement. We increased our participation for the first time in several years - by 2.4 per cent, better than the overall average of 2.1 per cent. Our percentage was 58.8 as against an overall 58.4.

Our dollars went up $6,257, 15 per cent over last year, as against an overall 18 per cent (an overall 10.3 per cent excluding the special $250,000 Challenge Fund). We qualified for over $7,000 from the Challenge Fund; but, since the total qualifying increases exceeded $250,000. our share was only $3,449. However, I am disappointed that our $47,838 total still trails several younger classes.

Among our classmates on the Hanover scene, Jack Skewes has been promoted to Business Manager of the College. Jack, who also holds a Tuck School M.8.A., joined the Dartmouth administration as assistant business manager in 1960. In 1967, he was promoted to associate business manager. Jack also recently moved into town after living in Etna for several years.

In case you missed it, Berl Bernhard will become a frequent traveler to Hanover as one of the College's two newest Trustees. Both were elected for five-year terms by the Board at its April meeting.

Berl, who also holds a law degree from Yale, is a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Verner, Lipfert and Bernhard. He served as staff director of Sen. Edmund Muskie's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1971 and was active in the Senator's behalf when he ran for Vice President in 1967.

After serving a clerkship with Judge Luther W. Youngdahl of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Berl entered private practice in Washington before returning to government service. He became successively deputy director, acting staff director, and staff director of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission from 1959 to 1963, when he became associated with his present law firm. He is also executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and since 1967 has been a member of the Board of Higher Education of the District of Columbia and a trustee of the new Federal City College.

We still have four classmates on the Alumni Council. Dick Dutton serves on the Alumni Fund and Regional Organization Committees. Al Karcher serves on the College Public Relations and Class Organization Committees and chairs the Athletics Committee. WesNutten serves on the Alumni Fund and Athletics Committees. Judge Jim Rogers serves on the Athletics Committee. The minutes of the Athletics Committee session at the June Council meeting concluded as follows:

"Mr. Karcher reported that the Alumni Council competitions in both gold and tennis were very successful.... [He] indicated that he plans an indoor tennis competition and squash activity at the December 1974 meeting."

On June 15, Dick Hulbert proved that our remaining bachelors are not really "confirmed" by marrying Deborah Roberts Telfer. Debbie graduated from Pine Manor Junior College and attended Parsons School of Design. She made her debut at the Westchester Cotillion and is an active member of the New York Junior League. Dick is a vice president and general auditor of the Chemical Bank in New York City.

In the business world, 1951 has two new Veeps. "Bing" Broido is the new vice president of Marketing Development for The Franklin Mint, the world's largest private mint. "Bing," who also holds a Tuck School M.8.A., is primarily responsible for the development of medallic series for issue by the Mint and for products of potential collector appeal.

He served as executive vice president of Hament Chomographics, Inc., and for 17 years was associated with Raymor/Richards, Morgenthau and Co., national wholesale distributors of contemporary home furnishings. "Bing," wife Lois, and their three daughters live in Moylan, Pa.
