Joe Mathewson's first book is about to be published. After several requests for information he delivered a description of it recently. 'He's as bad as the rest of you in terms of giving me information about himself.) The book is en titled Up Against Daley. Its jacket whets my aPpetite so I've already ordered a copy. You can too. by sending $9.95 ($10.55 for Illinois residents) to Open Court, Box 599, La Salle, Ill. 61301. "Will Mayor Daley survive the next election? Here is a book that argues that he may because a vigorous new movement of political independents threatens to sweep him - his famous machine - right out the window. This is the story of the new third force in Politics - a force that is growing not only in chicago. but across the nation as people become disillusioned with the established parties.
This is a tale of bespectacled intellectuals earnest reformers, unhappy blacks, eager lawyers, zealous door-pounders and precinct workers, told movingly by Joe Mathewson, a former Chicago TV newsman.
"Joe is intimately familiar with Chicago politics, having been a reporter and political editor for a Chicago TV station and a press secretary for former governor Richard B. Ogilvie. He covered national politics for the Wall Street Journal in Washington, D.C."
Nate Kotz's bride, Mary Lynn,' has collaborated with J. B. West to write Upstairs atthe White House. This book has been on the best seller list for an extended time and is now available in paperback. Mr. West was chief usher of the White House for 28 years. His experiences with six first ladies, Eleanor Roosevelt through Pat Nixon, make very interesting reading according to my wife Margie who is enjoying it very much.
Jack Krumpe made headlines in the New York press twice last spring. In April he decided to resign his post as president of the New York Racing Association. Then in late May he decided to accept the post of executive head of the New Jersey Sports Authority. He was appointed by Sonny Werblin who is chairman of the Authority. Jack will be responsible for erecting the new sports complex on the Hackensack meadows outside New York City which will become the home of the New York Giants. Jack's stated goal is to create the "greatest entertainment complex anywhere." I'm sure Jack will be able to supply all his classmates with choice locations for their season ticket reauests.
Jim Waldman wrote a most interesting description of his activities in Alaska. He is an Air Force career officer stationed at Elmendorf AFB involved with a squadron of 16 large transport airplanes. Their mission is to provide airlift and logistical support for Alaskan military forces. Jim was operations officer for seven months culminating in the awarding of the squadron's first outstanding rating for operational readiness. He was then promoted to Squadron Commander. He enjoys his work and says he'd love to see any of you who visit Alaska.
A very nice note from the bride of a member of the Class of 1960 advised that Ev Knowles married Nora Solmssen in June 1973. The couple was blessed by the arrival of Marie Alexandra on August 16 of this year. A hearty welcome to both Nora and Marie as new members of the 55 family.
Am reserving a few choice items of summer news receipts for next month so be sure to tune in then.
