News does trickle in during the summer. Some of the items were written as far back as last April. However, while the news may be old stuff to the subjects or to their close friends, it can still be interesting to classmates scattered around the country reading it for the first time. For example, Dave Birney married Meredith Baxter last spring. If you recall, they were the costars of a television series "Bridget Loves Bernie." The show had considerable warmth and charm due largely to the obvious affection that prevailed between the two leads. Even though the show was eventually canceled, we are delighted that Dave and Meredith continue on as Mr. and Mrs. (Just maybe, especially for the benefit of our wives, we could coax Meredith into doing an article for this column on what it's like to be married to a Big Green '61er who is prominent in show biz.)
One of the pleasures of writing this column is noticing how diverse are the means by which our classmates earn a living. On the one hand, you have Dave Birney chasing lovely costars around the stage. On the other, you have doctors like Tony Horan and Tom Goodridge being recognized for their accomplishments in medicine. Tony is a urologist practicing in Westport, Conn. This spring he was named a recipient of the Richard P. Ettinger Sr. Fellowship by the American Cancer Society of Southern Fairfield County. The fellowship provided an opportunity to study the immunotherapy of cancer at the Sloane Kettering Memorial Complex in New York City. During the summer, Tony presented a research paper entitled "The Significance of Bacterial Isolates from the Semen of Infertile Men" at The Society for the Study of Reproduction annual meeting held in Ottowa, Canada.
Tom Goodridge, residing in Silver Spring, Md., has been elected to Fellowship in The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the national professional organization for the medical specialty. The college, which was founded to promote the health and medical care of women, accepts physicians who specialize in obstetrics and gynecology who have demonstrated clinical ability by successful completion of an examination, and who have been judged by their colleagues as competent and ethical physicians. Further, a Fellow must be a graduate of an approved medical school and for at least five years prior, to applying for membership in the college he must have limited his practice to obstetrics and gynecology. Congratulations, Tom, and continued good luck with the practice!
Jack Houser is going strong in Houston. He's married and has two daughters. He writes: "For those who knew my Lab, Old Pepper, he's still active at twelve years old. See John and JanetHagaman when you can pin him down, he's coining many dollars in real estate investment with R. J. Marshall Co. When you're in Houston, give me a call!"
