After watching the Dartmouth football team Set decimated by Holy Cross (the 14 to 3 score belies the impotency of our attack i.e., vis six yards rushing and 45 yards passing) I would im- agine that on this Monday morning at least one coach recognizes the need for change! For the bulk of us more seasoned types, though, fall isn't that time of year when you make sweeping resolutions to do things differently. Perhaps it's the oncoming of winter that makes us behave in a more conservative fashion. Even Massachusetts, a State noted for being different to say the least, is having trouble this fall generating interest in a gubernatorial fight between a conservative Democrat and a liberal incumbent Republican. And if that combination can't heat things up a little, what can!?
Maybe we '56ers and members of the "silent generation" (God, that phrase gets me) have a page which others in the pursuit of obtaining results should copy. We seem to do our best work in the spring ... perhaps nothing more than a holdover from the Smith runs but nevertheless we certainly are becoming effective as an Alumni Fund force now! To those of you who have been used to seeing '56 at the bottom of the heap it may come as a shock that this year we led the Green Derby almost from beginning to end ... up until the very final closing when we lost first place to the Class of '53. Nearly 150 of you took part during this year's Alumni Fund effort and the results were truly exemplary in both dollars and participation! A round of snaps to Em Houck, all the regional class agents, assis- tant class agents, green team, and all of you who answered the call! There's life left in this old outfit yet! I'm not sure whether I'm walking on dangerous ground by beginning at this early date to talk about our 20th Reunion ... but it is little more than 18 months (and one fall) away. Time to get organized ... we'll need plenty of help on the Reunion of course, as well as lots of new faces on the executive committee and all the other class functions which need to be done. Please use your handy and still accurate ElliottWeinstein directory to drop me a note if you'd like to get involved with future class activities.
As of this writing our mini-reunion is just two weeks away and I understand that all the rooms at the Woodstock Inn have been sold out. Our class executive committee meeting will be held in AD House and hopefully we will be able to have our foreign scholar, Nelson Valverde, with us. He's a fine guest to have at your home and Egil Stigum welcomes your signing up as a host!
Here's to spring and the onslaught of old '56, and congratulations for making '74 a "very fine year,"
