The New York Times column on people and business carried several paragraphs on remarks by Clem Malin, deputy director of the Federal Energy Agency for international affairs, as taken from a Reuters interview in London. For the record, Clem sees a mandatory program to reduce oil consumption as a necessity to achieve the one-million-barrel-a-day oil import savings target by the end of next year. Neil Barker was appointed manager of solar system sales for PPG Industries, according to a recent news release. To be fair, the full context explains that the subject is solar energy systems for heating and cooling buildings. Neil and Shirley with their two children live in Sewickley, Pa.

The Harvey P. Hood Trophy, awarded to the outstanding head agent ten to 25 years out, has been given to Em Houck for his 1974 campaign. President Line Spauiding writes, "Em has worked long and hard building his RCA and ACA organization. This year, with lots of help from George Records and the Green Team as well as hundreds of concerned classmates, Em really put it all together." And Fund officials added to that, "Although always well organized, Em's combination of an intra-class Challenge Fund and a special participation effort boosted them to a new record achievement." Congratulations are in order all around.
Back in June Robert K. Hage, director of Dartmouth's Office of Financial Aid, wrote to Egil Stigum concerning Nelson Valverde, the current Class of 1956 scholar. Given the meaning of the undertaking to' our whole class Egil thought, and I agree, that the letter was worth reprinting here.
"Let me give you a year-end report on Nelson Valverde. He had a very fine freshman year with an overall average slightly better than B. During his last term he had one A and two B plus grades. In fact, he has never had a grade lower than B minus. He has indicated that he plans to major in Economics and Mathematics, do graduate work in Economics and make a vocation of being "Economist, Banker."
"A Government professor wrote of Valverde: 'Valverde turned in an outstanding performance in my section of Government 7 last fall. He and another student were at the top intellectually, and the other student was a sophomore and a U.S. citizen while Valverde was a freshman and a foreigner. He was ferocious in argumentation and ferocious in learning - strong prejudices but strong interest in testing his values against the data. Valverde is just first class, in character as well as intellect. Dartmouth already has reason to be proud of him' "
"An Economics professor wrote: 'He's a very tough-minded, likeable guy - not at all afraid of a challenge. Really the best kind of student who is here to learn, taking chances on difficult courses rather than sliding through. Still a freshman, he is already almost halfway through the Economics major and has a number of advanced courses in other fields under his belt. A very promising individual!' "
As you probably know Valverde has engaged quite actively in extracurricular activities. He was general secretary of the International Students Association, manager of the freshman soccer team, dormitory representative for the Aquinas House, member of the Dartmouth Outing Club, and active on the WDCR and the AEGIS staffs.
"It looks to me as if you have a winner here, in the best tradition of the Class of 1956 Scholars. I hope we can find someone to add to your list who comes close to being as good as Nelson Valverde."
