When you read news stories about the 1974 Dartmouth-Harvard game attracting the largest crowd in the history of Alumni Field you know you have two things. First, you have unbelievable masses of people and, second, you have a really fine group of members of the Class of '52 getting together for a great fall Saturday afternoon.
You may get tired of hearing about the very professional job done by Bill and Judy Breed during these occasions, but the fact is they leave no stone unturned to see that we all have a chance to enjoy ourselves before and after the game. The Harvard weekend was no exception. Before the game we had a rendezvous at the tents in front of the gym where Roger Eastman and his fellow members of the Hanover Lion's Club sold delicious fried chicken - in fact it was so good they sold out. As many of you know Roger not only runs a fine pharmacy in Hanover but he also dabbles in the band during the football season. This particular weekend his Lion's Club duties prevented his marching with the band, but he promises to be back on the field for the Columbia game.
The pre-game festivities also gave us a chance to see Sam and Pixie Wallis, Gene and LeeBrooks, the Don Myers (still visiting from St. Thomas), Bob and Pat Brace, and Jack andDodie Boyle up from Boston. The Boyles spread a family picnic for their boys while Sam Wallis was busy taking pictures we trust will show up in a future newsletter.
Duriilg the game we saw many more classmates and, considering that our class was seated deep in the end zone, we all had a chance for some good visits. John McCrillis was baching it for the game and that gave him and Ed Lyon ample opportunity to get caught up on activities. Ed's family was also in attendance. Bob and Lois Holmes, Chuck and Allison Curtis,Dave and Lois Larson, Jim and Jane Cook,Howie Smith and Debbie Philips are regulars who almost always enjoy the games and this date was no exception.
In addition, though, we saw many classmates who don't always make these weekends. TylerDann was with us for a while but he got away before we could get any news item. Tyler was up from Ramsey, N.J. Ned Sullivan traveled even further - from Virginia, but, as far as we know, the distance award this weekend goes to a pair of California couples.
Gil and Sally Ellenberger came to Hanover after a very enjoyable vacation week in Pennsylvania, New York, and New England including a brief trip to Nantucket and an overnight stay in Philadelphia with Lou and MardieZehner. The weekend was capped by the Harvard game, and dinner with John and NancyBarto and the Montgomerys in Concord. Gil reports that the Zehners are doing well and Lou's leasing business is surviving the tight money problem very nicely. The Bartos, by the way, are still working on their hobby of bringing their 1781 house to full restoration. This project has been going on for over 12 years and should be ready for its two hundredth anniversary. Meanwhile Nancy is valiantly raising three children (plus John), three dogs, and a cat. Gil is still with Crocker Bank in San Francisco where he is a vice president in the corporate bank division.
During the game we had a brief chat with Boband Beverly Millhouse who traveled all the way from southern California for the weekend. We had hoped to catch up on news after the game, but we lost them. I hope Bob will write us about news of his family and their activities in Northbridge, Calif. At least we want to recognize their share of the distance prize for the weekend.
After the Harvard game Bill Breed had reserved one of the most desirable rooms on campus for our cocktail party. I'm speaking of the Oberlander Lounge in Alumni Gym. This room right near the field gave us all a chance to relax and get caught up on news. Herb Drury was there, up from the Boston area where he is teaching in the Belmont, Mass., secondary school system and, if I recall correctly, his specialty is biology. Herb is still the skiing enthusiast and looking forward to the coming season. Also, up from Boston were the TedHaskelis and Mendy Balkin, his wife Laney, and their two boys. Paul Sanderson and his wife Gail were up from Connecticut, while Bid and RuthGuild made the short trip down from Montpelier, Vt. Finally, it was great to see Hank and Maureen Williams over from their home in Pittsford, N.Y. Hank is in law practice in Rochester and never did give us an answer as to how he got into that profession from his devotion to the theatre during his college days. Guess that's why he is a good attorney.
It is a great pleasure to report the promotion of Peter McSpadden to president of Dancer, Fitzgerald and Sample in New York. DFS is one of the country's largest and most important advertising agencies and many of you will recall it was their agency (and Peter's good efforts) that designed the logo for our 20th Reunion two years ago. Pete has been with DFS since 1959, became vice president in 1965, senior vice president in 1969, and executive vice president in 1973. He is also a director of DDF - DFS's international partnership. Pete and his wife, Barbara, live in Riverside. Conn., with their three boys
While we are all grateful there is no further American fighting action in the Far East there are frequent reminders of our remaining commitment to that area. This month we have received word of the transfer of Lieut. ColonelDrew Sleeper, U.S.A.F. to Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai AFB, Thailand where he is staff officer for the 56th Special Operations Wing. Drew had been stationed previously in the Netherlands.
Back to news from the Hanover area we have another first from our class. This column has previously reported on the civic activities of Steve and Ann Mandel in Darien, Conn. Now we are pleased to report that Ann Mandel has been named chairman of the executive committee of the Friends of the Library. This organization, whose main mission is to focus attention on the importance of the library to the Hanover scene, has an executive committee of about 12 members and they work closely with Librarian Ed Latham. Ann has been actively interested in the growth of the library (along with the entire Mandel family) for many years and she has been on the executive committee for the past two years.
As we close out this difficult year your class officers wish you the best for the holiday season and for an even better year in 1975. We hope you will include, among your new year's resolutions, one resolution to write us news of your family and the interesting things you are doing.
