After a rigorous and close election, I am happy to announce that I am the new secretary of our class. (Actually, the only other candidates begged me to take the position, but I am happy to take a win any way I can.) I am, however, pleased to have the honor of writing this column. This is a rather difficult time for our college and a good time for some introspection on the part of all. So please write and tell me what you're doing or what your thoughts are, and I'll send them in for print.
By the time this first column is published, Atlanta will be bursting into spring. (Eat your hearts out, New England.) In this short pre-deadline time, I have been in contact with mostly Atlanta '74s, and I will improve on my geographical distribution in the future.
Atlanta is happy to announce new prospects for the class of 2008. Dave andJane Cranshaw had a baby boy, John Farrah Cranshaw, on November 1, 1985. Dave is a partner in the law firm of Hurt, Richardson, Garner, Todd, and Cadenhead. I have also discovered that Ken andLucy Canfield moved from Denver to Atlanta in November and just had a baby girl, Molly, on January 31, 1986. Ken has just joined the firm of Kilpatrick and Cody and is studying for the Georgia bar.
Jeff Stewart was recently named partner with the firm of Arnall, Golden, and Gregory in Atlanta. He specializes in security law and mergers and acquisitions there. Jeff is an excellent triathlon competitor and continues to compete once a year in Savannah, Ga. Jeff tells me that his twin brother, Jack Stewart, and wife Terri recently had their second daughter, Carly, in October 1985. Their first daughter, Jeanine, was born in September 1983. Jack is an orthopedic surgeon and practices in the Seattle area. He and Terri live in Gig Harbor, Wash. Terri is presently working on her M.B.A.
Word has it that my buddy, Perry Ballard, has just opened his private medical practice in New York City. His speciality will be hematology and oncology. He is associated with the New York Hospital at the Cornell Medical Center.
I've tried to reach Rick Williams without success. His firm, Solomon Brothers, said he was off on a ski trip to rainy Lake Tahoe with Steve Allison and Doug Lind. I trust they will report on that later.
Herbie Hopkins is getting married (and will be married by the time you read this) in Philadelphia, Pa. More details later.
Allen Hirons is practicing law in Marietta, Ga. His practice is predominantly trial work. He was recently appointed to the Cobb County Board of Elections and Registrations. Allen will oversee all election and votor registration practices in Cobb County. Allen and his wife have a 22-month-old son, Warren. She is in her 10th year of special education teaching. Allen would like to hear from his college roommate, Jim Manning '79.
Jeff Baxter is practicing with the state attorney general's office in Atlanta and primarily represents health planning agencies. Jeff's wife, Gaylen Kemp, is with the law firm of Dow, Lohnes, and Albertson. Her primary area is securities law. They have two children, Charlotte, six, and Alexandra, two.
I recently left the Federal Public Defenders Office where I was in a fast-paced criminal defense practice in federal court. I am now in private practice in Atlanta, waiting for clients to break down the doors. My focus will be criminal law, but the lawyers with whom I am associated concentrate on civil litigation a new vocabulary for me.
Dave Shribman '76 and I want to hear from Bo Schemberger. And if anyone has heard from Debbie Reamer, Dartmouth exchange 1973, please let me know.
