We Bankarts fulfilled a long-standing invitation to join Barby and Dana Douglass for a winter weekend in Bethel, Me., a pretty risky item these days being a 400-mile round trip. Finalizing phone call assured us of gas there so we "took the car by the horns" and went February 15. No snow in Boston and darn little there. For a town of 3,200 population there is plenty of activity. We were offered a ride on one of their snowmobiles but lack of snow ditched that idea. Their typical old multiroomed country home is exceeded in size only by the barn out back and, typical of country living, the kitchen is headquarters. We visited the new zillion dollar Evergreen development where skiing was OK, 100 skimobiles available to rent with conducted tours on miles of trails, and there's even indoor tennis courts in one of those air-inflated balloon buildings. Doug continues in demand with his surveying business and Barby with her social welfare job. They own a large stand of pine out back which Doug and son-in-law are clearing so your secretary got to learn a bit about chain saws, value of logs, pulpwood and also how to dodge a falling tree and pick up branches. Doug suggested we return home cross-country to Gorham, N.H., then coast half way to Boston down Pinkham Notch. Brave words, but we did get to coast one stretch of over three miles.
They were looking forward to a ten-day cruise out of New York with two other couples on the Sea Venture March 10 to visit San Juan, St. Croix etc., which sounded great. They are marvelous hosts which made it for us a relaxing enjoyable time.
A card from Russ Stearns. As previously reported they are in Poland on engineering business mostly lecturing at various Universities. Says Russ "Trip good, all by car except one train so far. HQ Warsaw. Visited Karpacy in Sudeten mountains on Czech border and Gdansk on the Baltic. Lee helps a lot with charm and asking stimulating questions at lectures. Report now to Ministry then Moscow 3/7 and London 3/11 to see Steve (son) and Bonnie."
Mary and Fran Fenn are at this writing on a six-week trip to New Zealand and Australia (Them's WOOL countries, Fran). Fred Asher was elected board chairman of the Glencoe National Bank according to a recent release. Direct news on his new stationery headed Lifetime Nursery Products tells us their fig and Bonzai trees plus new additions to their line are beginning to take hold and if he hangs in there long enough he may get to see the end of the tunnel. Also he says Frank Robin has lined up almost 70 assistant agents for the comning fund drive starting April.
We thought Jack Young would stay put down south but no, he's in Washington: Says he, "Apparently got my job done in Birmingham in a hurry so got promoted to division manager for Lone Star Industries in the Pacific Northwest. We just got unpacked and are settling into our new home in Bellevue. It's rainy, misty, and wet here during the winter but, strangely enough, it is not depressing or unpleasant. We're liking it here. Son Jack '66 is in Madison, Wis.; Jane in Washington D.C.; and Bob '70 in Auburn, Ala."
