Whoever thought that 20 years after graduation we'd still be issuing birth announcements; but what better way to start the column than to announce the addition to the family of the Class of '54 of Miles Aronson. Proud father HowieAronson writes, "Never let it be said that we '54s are too old, 20 years after graduation, to undertake the responsibility of being new parents! My wife Marjorie and I adopted a little two-month-old baby boy on May 2nd, 1974. He is named Miles, and he has told me he wants to attend the Class of '92! He is our first child, and needless to say we are very excited and thrilled about our new arrival." Howie and Marjorie are living in New Canaan, Conn., when Howie gets home from his trips as a pilot for United Airlines.
We jump from newborn to new pea-green freshman. Julie Elizabeth Brief, daughter of Beth and Don Brief, and Stephen Adnopoz, son of the Bob Adnopoz's, were both admitted to the Class of '78 under the early decision plan. I am sure that two prouder sets of parents do not exist. Congratulations to Julie and Steve and their rightfully proud parents!
Thanks to our news-gathering Class Treasurer, Dick Barker, we have a note from Parker Caswell, who writes that he is still teaching at Marblehead High and coaching football at the Jr. High School. It sounds like Parker is trying to raise his own little league team made up of sons Peter, 13; Andy, 11; and Jon 7. Parker writes, "They keep me busy!"
Received a great letter from former Class Chairman, Tom Kelsey enclosing an impressive article on Dave McLaughlin published in the Greater Minneapolis Magazine. The article is an interview with Dave that we will quote more extensively in a future column. This time Kels supplied us with enough material for a whole column. To quote his letter, "Took the Kelsey clan to Washington, D.C., last month for three days of sight seeing. It was interesting that there are absolutely no visible signs of the Watergate events to be seen or observed.
"We did run, into Ben and Sarah Gilson and their children in the Smithsonian Institute Museum of Air and Space. Ben was in D.C. for two weeks doing his Reserve duty - seemed to me to be pretty good timing - height of the cherry blossoms and kids spring vacation!
"Dune Roberts (Chatham, N.J.) has moved his job with the General Electric Pension fund - he's the financial analyst, managing a substantial portion of the billions of dollars in the Fund - from New York City to Stamford, Conn. This makes for a daily commute by car about 160 miles! Dune is also active with the little league baseball in Chatham; coaches a 12-14 year old team that sounds pretty good. His own sons are three-five ball players themselves, and Alison, his wife, is a hell of a lady tennis player. Lots of cups adorning the bookshelves in the Roberts home.
"Finally saw Don Berlin the other evening. He and Barbara are going on the Dartmouth Club of Boston trip to Greece. Don's maintaining a lower profile in Morris County, N.J., Republican politics, but is plenty active trying to assure that some Republicans stay in office after next falls' elections." Thanks for the news, Kels. A few more correspondents like you, and writing this colume would be a sinecure.
Even some of our old non-writers are breaking down and sending a few words here and there. Got a note from Dick Gates from Grand Rapids indicating that he has joined the exclusive group of '54 Retailers. Dick is now the controller for a subsidiary of Wolverine World Wide - manufacturer's of Hush Puppy shoes. It was good to hear from you, "Pear." Can you still swing that hockey stick?
This is the last column until the fall. Why don't you take advantage of the summer months to drop a few friendly lines to your friendly correspondent? Let's hear the earth-shaking and the not so earth-shaking news. I'm waiting to hear from you.
