Dr. Daniel E. Kavanaugh has written a nice letter about his present circumstances after retirement. He and his wife Elizabeth are enjoying living in the adult community of Rossmore, N.J., where the lowest age of its 2200 residents is 48. A considerable number still go to business by car or bus. Elizabeth swims in the pool, and Dan plays golf on the eighteen hole course near by, and the last hole is only 100 yards from their home. He wishes that he had given up tennis some time back. Son Robert and Daniel Jr. along with "Peggy" and three grandchildren are frequent visitors.
Elizabeth and Dan attended the 50th Anniversary of the Class of the Albany Medical College in May, and on June 1 they attended the convention of the Medical Society of N.Y. where Dan received the "Golden Merit Award" for his 50 years of service as a physician. In the same month he completed his term of office as president of the Interfaith Counsel of Rossmore.
He is still active on the board of the New Jersey Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, being the first president in 1956. He continues to attend the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic at the Orthopedic Center of the United Hospitals in Newark.
On Thanksgiving morning 1974 the Interfaith Religious service, and the sermon was delivered by Rabbi Wykansky. The traditional dinner was held for 320 residents, relatives and friends. On April 4, 1975 the first Annual Interfaith Forum with the speaker Monsignor Oesterreich from Seton Hall University, and on Memorial Day a religious service was held, and the sermon preached by Rev. Oliver Cowles, a retired pastor of the Rossmoor Community Church.
Jack Hubbell has retired from Simmons Co. (the mattress makers). He says that he was not ready physically, psychologically, mentally or emotionally to retire, but after 46 years he wanted a new challenge - "a new mountain to climb." So he became a consultant. He committed two weeks a month to a major advertising agency. The company has contacted to undertake a special project for a top-flight department store chain. He has lined up two additional clients - a motion picture company with overseas commitments, and a travel agency. He is further interested in retail furniture or a department store operation. It sounds as if he would be busier than ever if he follows through on any of these.
Carl Mc Mackin wrote in June that he and his wife Evelyn were leaving for a "long trek" to New Hampshire, and would travel by camper, visit South Dakota, northern Wisconsin, upper Michigan and a part of Ontario, Canada. He says he'll be glad to get going because it's too hot in Arizona, with temperatures in the high 100's.
