Ben Drew called one day in August, full of yeasty plans for the Great Class of 32's 45th Reunion. All that energy, enthusiasm, and creative effort being put forth by Ben and his staff will surely wind up making June 14-17 Days and Nights to Remember. We have just conversed via phone with Mark Short, and since, we learn, he is giving in his letter a pretty full report on what Ben and team are up to, said letter reaching you before this column, we shall not here retail twice-told data. But this corner will endeavor henceforth to keep you hep on all reunion bulletins as they flash down from those splendid hills where, quite soon now, the Class will happily foregather.

Also a call from Howdy Pierpont the other evening, he was mighty pleased that the accommodations at White River's Holiday Inn he has reserved for the Class for the Penn game weekend (October 10-11) are already going in the proverbial manner of hotcakes. (You may remember Groucho's useful principle re that: "Why don't we just make hotcakes?") Demand started earlier and more briskly than ever before. Among the early birds reporting they will be on hand are the John Davidsons and CarlWards, both couples coming clean from California (the Wards in their new motor home), the Herb Pikes (from Akron), the Jim Corbetts,Dan Gages, Jim Moores, Bob Reinhardts, JoeRobertses, Whip Walsers, John Zimmermans.

Speaking of the Walsers, Whip has been elected president of the Agricultural and Construction Machinery Exporters Association, an organization he helped to found and has served as vice president since 1967.

Marv Chandler sent us a clip from the Chicago Tribune with a magnificent photo taking up the better part of a page depicting JohnSheldon, in oriental headgear, climbing aboard an elephant. The caption: "Three Rajahs of State Street climbed a pachyderm Friday to kick off the third annual State Street 'People Week' festivities. Donning Indian turbans, Arthur E. Osborne (left), vice president of Marshall Field & Co., Norbert E. Armour, chairman of Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co., and John W. Sheldon, (right) chairman of Chas. A. Stevens, boarded an elephant named 'Onyx' and paraded down State Street." Marv, who had just played golf with John, quoted him: "This was my first and definitely my last elephant ride."

As for Marv, he retired from Northern Illinois Gas Company in April, remaining chairman of the board of directors' executive committee. Joseph Gauthier, who now has his old post of NI-Gas chief executive officer, said in part: "As a businessman, Marv has that rare blend of intelligence and creativity that make him truly unique. Many of his pioneering efforts required a lonely type of courage that I can certainly appreciate. He also established a tremendous track record for community involvement. He was active in scores of organizations and provided singular leadership in national groups as well as his own community, Glen Ellyn."

The University of Oregon Health Sciences Center has announced the retirement of Dr. Ellie Jump as professor and chairman of the department of anatomy in the School of Dentistry. His professional honors include chairmanship of the section on anatomy and histology of the International Association for Dental Research.

Bill Kendall was reelected as representative to the Council from Region V, Southern States at the annual Alumni Council Banquet in Hanover in June.

The Class performed creditably, if not spectacularly, in the 1975 Alumni Fund. Two hundred and sixty-nine members contributed $52,879, which was 94.4% of our dollar objective. Our participation index was 63.4%, low for the classes of 1930-36 in our Green Derby group where, after leading much of the way, we finished fourth of six.

Mark them dates - June 14-17!
