On September 1 our class president celebrated his 95th birthday with a family gathering at his home in Pittsfield, N.H., but to the citizens of the town a more general observance was essential. So, on Sunday, the 7th, they took advantage of an occasion on which their "First Citizen" presented to the Pittsfield Historical Society an American flag and standard. After the formal acceptance of the gift, the meeting began to be transformed into a huge surprise birthday party.
On behalf of the town, the selectmen presented a plaque which was inscribed:
"Presented to Colonel J. Frank Drake in honor of his 95th birthday. In appreciation of his loyal and dedicated devotion to the Town of Pittsfield, New Hampshire. His vital interest, keen intellect, and steadfast generosity have nurtured our respect and esteem for a favorite son. By the Selectmen of the Town of Pittsfield, New Hampshire. September 7, 1975"
Then a three-tiered birthday cake was brought in. but the hail could no longer serve as center of ceremonies, for a marching band was coming up the street to salute the man who has meant so much to Pittsfield, and the celebration became a general display of the respect and friendship of the whole town.
