Greetings from Salt Lake, home of the 2002 Winter Olympics. While I am wearing long johns and ski clothes, by the time you open the Alumni Magazine to read this column, spring will be in full bloom and summer will be approaching. From my vantage point (sitting out in the cold watching skiers fly by me) that sounds like a pretty good thing. On the political front, a campaign financing bill seems to be working its way through thanks to Enron, and all of us are likely to see a whole lot more in the way of financial disclosure in the companies we invest in, whether we like it or not. Given where we've been since September, I suppose we should feel lucky to be focusing on these kinds of issues as opposed to the horrific memories of last fall. At Dartmouth things seem to be pretty normal and we are now in the admission season with applications running higher than last year. Now for some news.
From California comes word from Blake Winchell that a UFO in the form of a helicopter piloted by none other than his former roommate Jim Bildner landed in his front yard (successfully, I might add) and gave each of his sons Richard and Andrew a ride around their father's estate. Not to be undone, I had the pleasure of flying with Blake later in the month around the Half Moon Bay-Carmel area and landing safely in Salinas to enjoy a beautiful sunset. I'm sure for those who know me well, the idea of me flying around in a helicopter is a scary thought.
In news from Boston, Dennis Wright was appointed by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to fill a seat on the Boston school committee. Dennis is the executive director of the Urban Law Institute and a graduate of the Boston schools as well as a father of five. Dennis was sworn in on January 7. Congratulations, Dennis!
And from New Hampshire there is news that Bill Cahill has made it official—he is running for the Ist District U.S. House of Representative seat being vacated next year by Congressman John E. Sununu. Bill was a former member of the executive council and a former state legislator and is president of GSRG-Cahill Communications based in North Hampton. Good luck, Bill.
In news from Cleveland, Michael Corkran was named president of Hawk Corp.'s (NYSE:HWK) powder metal group. Prior to his appointment Michael was the president of North America and Asia for Reltec Corp., a telecommunications equipment manufacturer.
And, finally, I received word that Richard Wood was appointed to be vice president of product development of Easy Ask, a provider of search technology fore-commerce sites and portal and wireless applications based in Littleton, Massachusetts. And so it goes. Enjoy life, it only comes around once. Keep those e-mails and letters coming
