Happily Chastened
November 1975

Sid Hayward '26 and Corey Ford were close friends, enjoying that special companionshiop that comes during countless hours searching for the Great Trout and the Golden Day in the field. They even saw eye-to-eye on dogs - their handsome English setters, Bucky and Cider, were brothers - and so it was in the nature of things that Sid and Corey should collaborate on writing about what they did so much - and so well - together.

Unfortunately, Sid and Corey are no longer here, but they did favor us with "A Dialogue for Autumn," a fine story of companionship among men and dogs that first appeared in Field & Stream in 1952 and now again in a book called The Best ofCorey Ford. The story also appeared in our October issue but, alas, without appropriate acknowledgement, which should have been "by Corey Ford and Sidney Hayward."

Discovery of this regrettable error has left us feeling chastened but not totally despairing. There is a happy ending in that we now have the opportunity to reproduce the wonderful picture above.
