The toll of departed classmates continues to mount. Recently news came of the death of Lester H. Gibson in Florida. His obituary is included in this issue. This reduces the total number of surviving members to 36.
A letter also came from Carl (Dutch) Waterbury. He writes to commend my reference to Marc Wright of 1913 in the September Magazine. He and Marc were associated in track activities and he held him in high regard. Dutch says that his novel on Sam Occom is stymied by lack of funds for secretarial services. The urge to travel pervades Helen's and his desires. They plan a New Year's cruise to Bermuda or Iceland. As they have been to Bermuda, Dutch favors Iceland where he hopes to revel in a real sauna bath. It has always been his ambition to visit Yale Bowl but the realization is doubtful as he no longer drives.
Yesterday (October 28), the latest edition of 'LEVEN UP was received. The primary purpose of this issue was to provide all necessary information and the program of events pertaining to our 65th Reunion coming up next June. WeeKimball has done a superb job of presenting the whole picture in full detail. Where physically able, the decision to attend, or not, is a personal one, or perhaps a family one. No pressure is intended here. The 65th Reunion for all classes is the last to receive official recognition by the College. Any subsequent ones are strictly voluntary gatherings - dedicated to the super hardy and those whom a benign Providence has spared for untold years. This makes the 65th important! For those with the ability and a potential desire to attend, an early reservation, with the option to cancel as late as May, if plans go awry, seems like a logical gamble.
The present educational set up at Dartmouth calls for a ratio of 3,000 men to 1,000 women for the first four year period. With the entering class of 1980, a redetermination is to be made as to the ratio for the next four years, or longer, and there is a considerable indication that this may result in a move to reduce the male factor below 3,000. This situation was discussed in the recent issue of 'LEVEN UP, but at the time of writing the September Bulletin had not been received. It is suggested that you review this entire subject through your copy of 'LEVEN UP, the article entitled "An Irrestible Force?" in the September Alumni Magazine, and the back page of the September Bulletin, especially as regards the Alumni Council Study Committee. In an effort to preclude the possibility of any reduction in the male representation at Dartmouth, it is further suggested that you register your position in the matter at the earliest possible moment. The Trustees will probably take action early in 1976. Your remarks should be addressed to Mr. J. Michael McGean, Secretary of the College, 206 Crosby Hall in Hanover.
Our hearty congratulations to John Learoyd and the contributors to the 1975 Alumni Fund for a record participation index and an increase in the total dollars over 1974.
As this issue of the Magazine will appear around mid December, we send our best wishes for the Holiday Season to the 1911 Family.
