Had a quickie note from the Mad Nomad, Bud Yallallee from Salisbury, Md. He was heading south. Said he saw Ed Brown in Hanover on his way; chatted with Bill Scherman via phone; was writing two articles in Salisbury and then on to Morehead, N.C., before ending up in Ocala for a month covering the "horses." Thanks, Bud, write again from Florida.
Ed Brown is again sending your comments on the reverse of the dues bills, so I'll tune you in with them over the next couple of months.
Mayo Cohen wrote a long letter to Ed. Last January, he suffered a heart attack which laid him up for four months, but is now back on full duty, thank goodness. Said he expected to see all nine Dartmouth games with his wife. They built a year-round house at Waterville Valley, N.H. His son Norman '72 graduated from Connecticut Law School in June and is waiting to hear the results of his bar exam. He will serve with Vista for a year in Alaska. His daughter Leila who has been an assistant manager of Ormond Clothing Chain at Meriden, Conn., has been transferred to Allentown, Pa. Thanks for the newsy letter, Mayo.
Bob Balgley retired almost three years ago, says he is "busier than ever between travel, volunteer activities, and keeping up with children and grandchildren (four on the scene and two more to come). Recently returned from exiting visit to up-country Scandinavia and soon will be off to the Orient." Not a bad way to live, Bob.
Bill Scherman just wrote about the mini-eunion at Hanover and said he saw 40 or 50 classmates either at the game or at affairs Johnand Fran Lyle or Ed and Barbara Brown held. As a result of this year's doings, they have reserved a big block of rooms at the Chieftain Motel for the Dartmouth-Harvard game next fall. It will be the first time in Ivy League history that Harvard has played at Hanover, so our guys in Hanover have protected us by getting rooms all lined up. Plan to be there next fall!
A postcard from Nance and Andy Donaldson all the way from Kenya, South Africa, was a most pleasant surprise. They had spent (at that time, October 2) five weeks in South and East Africa, having travelled by plane, train and car and felt they really met the people. They had planned to go to Ethiopa, but due to the trouble there, were going to London instead. Thanks for the "Ostrich" picture post card, Andy. It reminded me of several of our classmates, who shall remain unnamed!
Art Leonard, our genial bequest chairman, wrote that he would be in Hanover for the Holy Cross game. Hope you made it, 'cause we won that one. Planned also to be at the Cornell game and to attend Class Officer's Weekend. Art would, I know, appreciate hearing from one and all in connection with bequests for the College.
Charley Strauss wrote that he and Helene were off to London to reunion with their sons Andy '65 and Charley '65 and to meet Charley's fiancee. Said he hopes the team is better than Ray Holsart predicts. So do we, Chas.
Joe Swenson said he had called the Hotel Coolidge and reserved a double room for the weekend of October 10-11 and that no deposit was necessary - then he asked Ed to check and make sure his name was on the list for that weekend. Hope your credit was good and all went well, Joe.
Jim Dunne wrote a long letter to Ed, enclosing his check. He said he hadn't been back to Hanover except for two brief instances, since graduating. One such visit was to introduce Dartmouth to his son, but it didn't take and he took his CE Degree at Texas. He now lives in California and works all over the world designing and building off-shore oil drilling installations. Jim and Nettie have "knocked about the world quite a lot" while he was guiding the destinies of American Bridge. He retired a couple of years ago and moved to Sarasota, Fla., where they golf, go boating from their boat which is moored at their back door. Their daughter is married and also lives in California. He looks forward to our 45th. So do I, Jim, and I'm sure you will enjoy it.
From the National Life of Vermont comes a news clipping from Jacksonville, Fla., citing still another honor for Isaac Sulzbacher. He has been named by Governor Askew to be a director of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (roads and busses). Congratulations, 'I.M!
That should do it for now. We leave about the middle of January for Juno Beach, Fla., for the winter. Write me there at 20 Celestial Way, Apt. 308. - Zip code is 33408, just in case you have some tidbits I should share with the Class.
