Well, the twenty-year itch seems to be reaching our class. We get note after note about classmates on the move, both professionally and geographically.
Let's start with our man in Washington who has now become our man in Oslo - BillMansfield. After a period of time on loan from the State Department to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he was director of the Bilateral International Program, Bill has been named Counsellor of Embassy for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway. Bill's assignment is for three years, starting from this past July when he took up his new post. Bill was previously assigned to Norway and, in fact, met his wife, the former Miss Kirsten Ursin, in Oslo. Bill, Kirsten, and sons Jan and Christopher are living in Oslo now. According to our information. Bill has a lot to be proud of in his accomplishments with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In his post as director of Bilateral International Programs, he was instrumental in the development of the U.S.-Canadian Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, which was signed by the President and the Canadian Prime Minister. This agreement was a joint measure to protect the Great Lakes against pollution. He also was active in expanding cooperation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and other countries through bilateral cooperative agreements for the control of environmental pollution. Bill Mansfield has done his part to clean up the world!
Mead Metcalf, our super-host in Aspen, Colo., writes that he and Joan have spent the fall motoring around Central Europe. As most of you skiers know, Mead runs the Crystal Palace in Aspen, where dinner and show are one of the hottest tickets for the visiting tourist. The Crystal Palace has been recently remodeled, adding a horseshoe balcony, opera-house style, along with a second floor addition, which is being leased for office space. Mead writes, "I still think life in the Rockies the ideal, and don't envy any of you who live the metropolitan life whatsoever. A week in New York on our return from Germany convinced me!" I'm not going to argue with you, Mead.
Joe Mesics is on the move, too. However, his move is only a business trip and not of permanent duration. Joe is in the motorcycle business with Cycle and has recently completed a trip to Japan for his company. I can just picture Joe crunched down over the handlebars on the narrow Japanese roads looking for his friendly tavern.
Barry Nova is on the move both professionally and geographically. Barry has joined the United States Tobacco Company with offices in Greenwich, Conn., only five minutes from his home. After years in the agency end of the advertising business, this must be an interesting change for Barry. However, he is complaining that he has had to make a big sacrifice for his new position - he has given up riding the beautiful New Haven Railroad and paying the New York State income taxes! Barry and Susan have just completed a month-long trip, combining business and pleasure, of Sweden, Portugal, and Morocco. It sounds like that new position is really tough!
If any of you in the New England area were lolling around home during the mornings of Christmas week, you might have been blessed with the face of Tommy Corcoran peering out from your television screen. Tommy's super ski- resort - Waterville Valley - was the subject of a week-long series of one hour programs on the Boston NBC television station. This series included an interview with our Class of '54 super ski developer, who did himself and the Class proud. But, then, that's only what we would expect!
After years of apparently trying out every job in the Federal Government, Jon Moore is putting his experience to use as director of Harvard's Institute of Politics. The Institute and John were the subject of an article in a December issue of The Boston Globe, detailing a training session being held for freshmen Congressmen-and-women-elect. Jon explained the program was still experimental but hoped that other institutions would develop similar conferences. The ultimate purpose of the conference, according to Jon, is to improve politics and political life. There is no question, in my opinion, that such improvement is obviously required. There is also no question in my mind that no one has more experience in Government than our roving Jonathan Moore. So who could do a better job.
We're getting to the end of our news sources, most of which have been supplied on a continuing basis by Treasurer Dick Barker. Since we don't collect dues a second time this year, I hope some of you will come through with some news, even if it is only of limited interest. I can't wait to hear from you!
