Dartmouth's track team opened its season on the wings of meet record performances by Rich Berryman in the dash and Rich Nichols in the 600 as the Green trimmed Bates and Colgate in a triangular event. Berryman won the dash in 6.2 seconds and Nichols took the 600 in 1:12 flat. Dartmouth collected 108 points, Bates had 50 and Colgate had II.

In swimming, Dartmouth resumed action at Navy and saw a couple of near - misses in the individual events make the difference as Navy took the final relay and the meet, 57-56. Freestyler Mark Stebbins and versatile Paul Crane have picked up where they left off last year as steady point producers.

The wrestlers started their season with a 33-9 loss at Harvard with sophomore Kevin Young (177) and Captain Jim Conterato (190) getting the only wins for the Green. At the same time, Dartmouth's squash team returned to action and absorbed a predictable 9-0 loss at Harvard. Scott McCallister took Harvard's top player, Dick Cashin, to four well-played games before bowing in the lead match.

In fencing, Dartmouth also bowed to the Crimson, 19-8, as Dale Rodgers presented a Green team that has already shown significant signs of progress in his brief tenure. In gymnastics, Cornell demonstrated that it is still the top team in the Ivy League with a convincing win over Dartmouth - which is still the second-best team in the circuit.

The skiers are all over the place in the early January individual events and the question facing Coach Jim Page is: Who will be here and who will be in national competition by the time the carnival season rolls around? Led by Chris Nice, Don Nielsen and Jim Crawford who had a convincing team victory in the 30- kilometer Hanover Relays (by two and five minutes over a pair of U.S. Ski Association entries), plus a winning performance by freshman Chris Berggrav in the Hanover open jump competition at the Vale de Tempe, Page's skiers showed that they have ample talent. The Alpine racers look just as good. They may be too good, probably to disappear to bigger competition before the winter is over.

The women's teams in basketball, swimming and squash have yet to compete this winter. The women gymnasts have split two meets, both in early December.
