The Jones Microtext Center has been added to Baker Library as a memorial to the late Berkeley Fairfax Jones '25, made possible by gifts from his family and friends.
The Center consists of four distinct but closely related areas for the storage, handling, and use of various microforms: a microtext reading room, located in what was a general study hall on the northeast corner of Baker's lower floor; a two-level storage room behind the Orozco murals in the reserve corridor; a room for group viewing; and an area with a reading lounge, which provides access to current newspapers.
The memorial to Mr. Jones, a California attorney, adds substantially to the facilities at Baker in making easily available to students and faculty scholars the rapidly accelerating microfilm collection. In the late '40s, the College's only microfilm reading machine was kept in a closet on the mezzanine floor. Since 1960, microfilm holdings have grown from 3,500 units to more than 400,000, stored until now in makeshift quarters.
