This column starts on a sad personal note for all of us. Dean Couper's wife Mabel was killed on November 4. She was standing near the parcel pick up area at a supermarket when a car swerved out of control and struck her. Mabel was a most loyal Dartmouth fan attending many reunions and other class gatherings with Dean. She was also a very dedicated participant in community activities in Kensington, Md., their home. Our sympathy goes out to Dean, to son Frank, also a Dartmouth graduate, and to daughter Barbara, as we remember this gentle friend of us all.

Reading the Boston Herald the other day, I came across the announcement by President John Silber that Paul Siskind is resigning as dean of the Boston University School of Law at the end of this academic year after more than ten years in the position. Paul will continue as a professor of law. Talking with Paul about this on the phone, he was particularly happy to say that two Dartmouth and B.U. law graduates have been chosen as clerks to U.S. Supreme Court justices. Larry Sims '66, has completed service for Justice White and Bill Eggeling '67 is now serving Justice Renquist. Paul has two brilliant daughters, one married and owning a doctorate from the University of Maryland, and a second, teaching in Washington and to be married in January. Al Zimmerman regretted missing our 40th but had a conflict with a Bnai Brith Convention in which he is much involved. Since retiring three years ago from Sears, Roebuck after 37 years, Al has devoted time toSCORE and to teaching retailing at a localjunior college here in Boston.

Another teacher, Will Kempton, is still at it inFlorida but does get to New Hampshire eachsummer running what he calls "a small, possiblylast, resort and a youth hostel." Hope of retirement is thwarted by inflation but "teachingkeeps us young."

From Ocean Ridge, Fla., comes word thatthis is "the place." Bob MacLaren spends sixmonths there now and six in Towanda, Pa.Their daughter heads the Science Dept. of Over-brook School for the Blind in Philadelphia.Their son, who graduated from Wake Forest, iswith the North Western Bank of Wilkesboro,North Carolina.

Ty Carlisle "still minding the store" inAshtabula. Two of their three children live nearby and three grandchildren are "keeping us upto date." Ty says he doesn't have many '35 contacts but does keep an annual golf date with DonFraser. Didn't mention his handicap but maybehe's a pigeon for some of you Ohio fellows!

Alumni Records reported Dick Meyers at a new address on the same street in Dallas so I asked him how come: "The address is new, across and up the street. Why? - never could resist a 'good buy' so now we are in twice the size we need so look for another change in the next two years." Dick is in the real estate brokerage business. Likes to know of anyone who wants to buy or sell income property!

Howard Kaiser has retired as president of the hosiery division of Burlington Industries. In August this year he "married Stephanie Elliot, a beautiful, talented actress with three kids - and a sense of humor." We congratulate you both, Howard!

Another retiree without time to do everything he wishes is Oliver (Jack) Knode. They now spend the winter in Sarasota and are building a summer cottage at Watch Hill, R.I.

Bill Kuhn writes that lumber prices are driving millwork wholesalers craze but he's kept busy with smaller houses and additions. He flies to Virginia about every three weeks to see three granddaughters in spite of a scary experience when he went out a plane window on a fake bomb call as his plane touched down in Honduras.

Yet another honor and responsibility has come to George Colton. He is one of three new members elected to the board of directors of National Medical Fellowship, Inc. the nation's only agency giving financial aid to minority-group medical students. Since its founding in 1946 it has awarded more than $11,000,000 to students who without financial support might not have been able to attend medical school.

Jack Raphael reports the New York '35 luncheons are continuing on the first Wednesday of each month at the Yale Club. Come and join a mini-reunion!
