Well into the ski season here in Denver now, Hanover's climate perhaps has shown signs of white by now, too, as Dartmouth's '76 football record takes its final shape, perhaps rectifying correctly last year's auditing. Other campus news of possible interest includes such issues as the consideration of a new college symbol, the Woodsman, and a gift from an alumnus, a sculpture by the famous Mark di Suvero, entitled "X Delta."
Our body of news from last month suffered severe blows to its posterior portions due to a verbose class secretary and an abundance of alumni news throughout the Magazine, but our column was not the only one requiring "holds." Accordingly, the chronologically written paragraphs are presented here with our sincerest apologies for news that is now even older (but still important).
Participating in the wedding party of JodyHill (now Jody Hill Simpson) and Rick Simpson ('74 Harvard) on May 30 in Marblehead, Mass., were Candy Neville, maid of honor, CandyIngals, Martha Hennessey '76, and Rick Hill '76, and, of course, Richard D. Hill '41. The first Candy finished a career at the First National Bank of Boston before this fall's enrollment at Stanford University School of Business Administration, the second Candy left a law firm in Washington, D. C., to attend the University of Virginia Law School. (Congratulations to both!) Rick works for an insurance company in Boston, and the father of the bride continues to devote his time to a trusteeship of the College in addition to myriad other endeavors. Onlookers at the momentous event were John Lundgren '73, now in Greenwich working in the consumer towel and paper division of American Can Co., John and Diann Nystedt '73, John Neff'73, and Caroline Preston '75, among many others. The photograph of the Dartmouth people contained at least 30 of us! Jeff Jones, there with Rita (married June 5), reported his new job with Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati and Rita's hope to continue her work with CBS or similar involvement in communications. Jeff informs us that Brad Gilman, an usher in Jeffs wedding and famed newsletter editor, now teaches U. S. History for Marlboro School in Los Angeles. Also there for Jeffs rites were Mark Ransom and Steve Bohlen - Steve heading into a Ph.D. program in geology at the University of Michigan.
In a discussion with Bruce "Willie" Williamson, it appears that Bob Funk was married in August and has started an Oklahoma-based oil drilling company; Tom Allen has transferred after two years from South Dakota Medical School to a clinical-medicine program at Tufts; Bill Carpenter finished his first year at Northwestern Business School, then worked the summer for Motorola; Paul Lukeman took over the spot held by James St. Clair in the prestigious Boston law business; George Vorys got his M.B.A. from Ohio State University and now heads for a law degree from Capital University in Ohio; Brook Maese (Tuck '75) is a salesman for Mobil and lives near Cincinnati; Al Watson finished his second year of medical school at Southern Illinois University; and Dan White is between his second and third years at Case Western School of Law. (Whew!)
Also a worthy news correspondent is Billy Perell, now at Cook Industries in Kansas City, who reports the marriage of Jeff Hanson to Janice Crawford on May 29. Jeff is still at the Duke Medical School. Bill mentioned without detail that Rick Thirlby is now married also. Congratulations! Billy was lucky enough to make it north to Madison for the September 4 wedding of Dick ("Rufus Bearclaw McBean")Cates and Kim Johnson. His partial list includes Mickey Stuart '71, Holly Clark '79, Fritz Meyer '73, Greg Kelley, Julie Miller '76, Duke Robertson '75, Rick and Pat Thirlby (also newlywed), Ken Stowe, Budge Gierke, Steve Larson '69, and Bruce York '76. He reports that they will live in Missoula, Mont., where he will engage in agronomy studies and host "endless free-loading Hanoverians," according to Bill. The fourth such event joined Rick Woolworth and Jill Shaw ('77 Stanford, after two years at Dartmouth) in Southport, Conn., including as best man, Rick's brother Andrew, and as bridesmaid, Marion McClure '77, as stated in the September 12 edition of The New York Times. They return to Stanford for final years in undergraduate and graduate business schools. Quadruple congratulations!
Also recently joined in wedlock, according to the Sept. 5 1976 New York Times, were ChasCarner and Jennifer Kemeny '76 on September 4 in the President's garden. John Lyons '73 was best man. Marge Feldberg, maid of honor in the ceremony, has been working at New York-based ADP-Cyphernetics with Jennifer, an account manager there.
Following the tragic death of one of our classmates (please see obituaries), the Albert N. Pelz Jr. Memorial Fund was established by the direction of Tim Cross '73, to combine the elements of Dartmouth College, Outward Bound, and the Middle Earth School, an alternative educational program for pre-deliquent adolescents in which Al taught since his graduation. The fund has as its purpose to enable the participation of at least one Middle Earth student in an Outward Bound course each year. Contributions may be made to Dartmouth College - specify for use by the Pelz Fund - and mail to Mrs. E. Ely, 101 Crosby Hall, for this considerate action.
News not containable in this issue includes that from Chuck Post, Jack Thomas, RichWinkler, Dutch Kuckhahn, and Paul Corwin. Never fear, for these hence will appear!
