On Saturday morning before the Harvard game a meeting of the class executive committee was held, and it was, inevitably, a sad one - sad because the reason for it was to act on the resignation of Squee Ellis as class president because of continuing ill health. Squee has been suffering from arthritis for a long time, and the discomfort and the treatments have forced him to curtail many of his activities, including his Dartmouth 1938 office. The committee accepted Squee's retirement with extreme regret. Our vice president, Tom McGrath, has agreed to serve in Squee's stead for the duration of his term.

Sitting in on the meeting, Al Cook, of the College secretary's office, noted, "It's a tough job to be class president, even more so with a reunion coming up." In acknowledging your secretary's good wishes, Tom conveyed the same feelings: "With our big 40th in the wings, I'll need everyone's support." Let us all provide Tom with this support in every way we can.

In addition to Squee, executive committee members attending this meeting were Carl VonPechmann, John Scotford, Phil Leach, BobHallock, Gil Tanis, Robb Kelley, Paul Urion,Dick Holt, and Jim Briggs.

Many of the above with their wives enjoyed the hospitality and companionship of the Tanis backyard before the game. Other classmates seen there included Gus Southworth, Luke Nims, Bill Lyle, Johnny Nelson, Bob Forgan, Charlie Hitchcock, Dave Duffy, Herb Harries, Lew Parker, Alex Jones, Ray Ammarell, Bob Ross, Jack Russell, and Jim Chandler, all, I believe, with their wives. My apologies to any who were there and are not listed here. The afternoon's activities on Memorial Field were very disappointing. Any losing game is a tough game to lose, but that one was especially so.

Ham Ferris' wife Janet kindly sent me a long clipping from the Santa Cruz (Calif.) Sentinel with a truly dramatic account of Ham's nautical adventure. She sent another copy of the story to "Pace Setter" editor Dan Marshall. I hope Dan has used, or will use it. If not, I'll try to in the future within class notes space limitations. It's some hair-raising!

The past month saw the deaths of two of our classmates, Dick Chase, on October 11, and Dave Freeman, on October 24. I've performed the sad duty of expressing the sympathy of their classmates to Edith Chase, 5731 Caranor Drive, Kent, Ohio 44240, and Connie Freeman, 26 Whiting Street, Plymouth, Mass. 02360. Obituaries will appear in this or a future issue of the MAGAZINE.

Class treasurer Gus Southworth has thought-fully provided me with notes which accompanied classmates' dues remittances to him. Al Boerker, who now lives in Manassas, Va., reported "a good summer in New Hampshire, including a day in Hanover"; Jack Lutz regretted that family commitments precluded his and Millie's attendance at the Harvard game; and Jim Cotter planned to be there, though I didn't see him. Gus welcomes dues from any who haven't remitted yet, with or without accompanying notes and news. I welcome the news.

I was grateful to Cotter for a card featuring cranberry harvesting, in full color. The thought of cranberries in that profusion boggles the mind!
