As it has every year since 1965-66, the cost of a Dartmouth education is going up. Starting this summer, Dartmouth students will face total charges of $6,224 for tuition, room, and board for three terms, an increase of $525.
In the three categories, tuition for three terms is being raised by $330 to $4,230; dormitory room rents by an average of $135 to an average total of $858; board rates by an average of $60 to an average total of $1,136. Concurrently, there will also be a modest liberalization in Dartmouth's financial aid policies.
The increases in tuition and fees are expected to place Dartmouth's charges in the middle rank for Ivy schools. A week after the Trustees authorized the new figures, Princeton announced total costs for next year of $6,275. One advantage accruing to Dartmouth students is that under year-round operation only 11 terms (instead of 12) are necessary to fulfill graduation requirements; at next year's prices the one-term savings amount to $2,075 for tuition, room, and board.
In 1965-66, the last time charges didn't go up, the basic cost of attending Dartmouth was $2,715.
