By the time you read this column, the Class of 1976 will have graduated. That class was the first to have been totally coeducated. It has been four years since our class graduated, the last all-male contingent, and during my visit to Hanover for Class Officers' Weekend in early May, I was pleased to see that the Class of 1976 has an executive committee, which is nearly ½ women [including Steve Kepes' (WLQA Cincinnati, Program Director) sister, Nancy]. I think it's an indication that despite what we may have thought, the Class of '76 was satisfied with the change.
Heading off this last column until October is Ken Jacobs, who admits to being a clerk for Philadelphia Life in San Francisco while trying to make a go of his first love (music, film scores, songwriting) in his spare time. North Topliff refugee Mike Moore, having graduated from Stanford Law, is an attorney with the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice. I had to memorize this info, since it self-destructed five minutes after I read it. Rick Wahlstrom is working for Chase Manhattan in Rio de Janiero. Rick's spouse Lucia is from Rio.
Dave Friend is now gainfully employed in the cityplanning/architect racket with the City of Boston as his employer. With such projects as the southeast expressway, the John Hancock Building (formerly the greatest plywood structure in the world), and the Storrow Drive traffic circle in Boston's past, I'm sure little Dave will do well, at least in comparison.
Bob Ambler writes that he has just completed an elective in gastroenterology (!) at Mayo Clinic. He'll be graduating from Rutgers Med in the spring, and he and his wife Helen will soon be moving to NYC, where Bob will do a residency at Bellevue Hospital. Bryant Toth will also finish up med studies (at Brown) this spring, and will begin his residency in general surgery July 1 at H.C. Moffitt-U. of California Hospitals.
Chris Cain and wife Pam have been trying to maintain a home in Atlanta, but several business trips (i.e., Europe, West Virginia, Iowa) have made it difficult. Mark Stitham armed with an M.D. from Washington U. and a stint as a St. Louis D.J. (shades of WDCR), is considering law school in the fall; Mark is thus knocking on the door of professional studenthood (also known as entering the "mental convent").
Now for a concentrated dose of doctors, residencies and specialties: Alan Unis will graduate from Pittsburgh Med in May, and on July 1 will begin residency in child psychiatry at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in. Pittsburgh. Wells Martin will leave Cincinnati Med for a residency in radiology at U. Virginia. John Sanstead will graduate from Jefferson Med in June, and then attend Duke as an intern in internal medicine. Bob Shepherd will graduate from McGill Med and begin surgical residency at Montreal General Hospital. MikeShanahan finishes up at Wisconsin Med and begins residency at Georgetown in July. JohnDuguanis leaves Cincinnati Med for one year of internal medicine at Albany (NY) Medical Center Hospital before heading for Philly and Jefferson U. Med Center for a residency in ophthalmology. Rick Greenberg will be taking on a residency in Detroit after graduation from B.U. Med.
Bruce Routman now resides in Oklahoma City with wife Barbara. Bruce is self-employed and reports that his skis are "rusted to hell out here." Charles Eaton was married in October (Dana Cristman), and now lives in San Bueno, Calif. Dave Elseroad is a foreman of an installation crew for C.I.T. Telephone in Maryland. He reports that Steve Riggal is a married man, teaching in Lebanon, N.H. Hank Hakewill confirmed that he was/will be married to Kathy Munz on June 19, and added that DougGreenlaw was transferred to Cranston, R.I., where he labors as a cost analyst for Davol, Inc. Mike Meehan has moved to Rochester, N.Y., but continues to work for Bausch & Lomb in the sales division, while taking courses at RIT toward an MBA.
This is the last column you will read until the fall, and Ghort wishes all of you a great summer. "May the sun be continually on your gears and keep you all viscous," were his exact words. Special commendation to Bob Morrison from Ghort. Although his wedding picture, as previously noted, didn't make the Alumni Mag, it was a crucial part of the argument which makes the printing of a wedding picture in the Alumni Mag possible even if the BRIDE appearsin it. Good, clear, black and white pix with Dartmouth men and women will be considered, despite the appearance of a non-Dartmouth spouse in it. I tip my hat to the Alumni Mag people who were willing to listen to the ramblings of a demented, but sporadically incisive garbage disposal.
Until October, may all your burns be attributable to the sun ...
John Burke was awarded the title of Class Secretary of the Year at Class Officers Weekend last month in Hanover. In reading the citation to John, College Secretary Mike McGean '49 also applauded John's assistant, Ghort.
"John, as you have moved from the back of the book - there will be four classes behind next fall - you have given your classmates, and many other readers, a lot of information and wonderfully entertaining reading along the way," says the citation in part.
