Another month of disability did give me a chance to phone classmates for news as well as to ask for Alumni Fund help. Otherwise the column would be a blank. Incidentally, for those of you who have been taking my money on the golf course, the doctor has promised a prescription for extra shots this year.
First as a continuation on last month's note on class of '45 members in the special marine OCS class, the names of Ted Samuels and Skip Tobias were omitted. In addition the class included a number of Dartmouth V-12s affiliated with other colleges.
A conversation with Steve D'Arrigo brought news that his back problems of last year are vastly improved but that he still is limited to part-time at work and does a lot of walking. His problems resulted from a bacterial infection and at one point he spent 121 days in bed. He is hoping that a visit to Mass General in April will bring news that he can return to work full-time and that he can get back to the golf course. Steve is involved in the family wholesale produce business in New York City.
Lan McKinnon is in solo practice as an internist in Hartford, Conn., and at the moment has no intention of retiring. However, in May he is taking a leave of absence to have a hip replaced. His wife died 14 years ago but he has six children, four of whom are around East Hartford, including a daughter who is at the University of Connecticut Law School. His oldest child is a major flying in the Marine Corps and lan reminded me of the chance meeting on Okinawa 45 years ago with Steve Hull and me. He also promised to think seriously of the reunion in 1991 —as you all should.
Closer to home I interrupted a Sunday afternoon for both Sam Cutler and ShortyPierce. They, with their expert golfing spouses, Gertie and Allon, will be heading for their annual April golfing jaunt in Virginia. The Cutlers had already enjoyed twoplus weeks of sun and golf in the Stuart, Fla., area.
Shorty had also traveled a business seminar in southern California, because "I can't retire yet," whete he experienced the recent earthquake. On the day before we talked he was a delegate to the Massachusetts Republican convention (I think he and Allon had some pillow talk about his vote!) where he saw Mo Frye briefly.
A call to Vic Smith brought news of the birth of their first granddaughter (after two grandsons), Alexandra Elizabeth Stark, on November 27.
In the most recent DAM one of the secretaries admonished his classmates that the class newsletter is for the class but that the secretary's column is not only for the class but also for contemporary classes which in our own case extends to 1949. Hopefully my time by the telephone will only last another ten days so please write. And don't forget the Alumni Fund.
