The day of this writing is Derby Day - Kentucky Derby that is, suh - while the month of this reading is Derby Month — Green Derby that is, in which the classes of 1946 through 1952 are competing for some important stakes in the 1967 Alumni Fund drive. There probably is a clever correlation which could be drawn between these two Derbys, but maybe it will be sufficient to say that if 1950 wishes to emulate "Proud Clarion" and finish ahead of the pack it will have to put on a stunning burst of effort during the waning moments of the drive. Right now (as of the May 1 report) we're lost in the fog of Churchill Downs' backstretch as far as being a contender for participation laurels goes, with but a 17.9% participation index for our class versus a 31.7% index for the total fund.
A rare and special honor came to - Dave Davis last month when he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction for his book "The Problem of Slavery in Western "Culture." Dave is Ernest I. White Professor of History at Cornell University. His Pulitzer Prize book, published by the Cornell University Press, is intended as the introduction to a multivolume history of antislavery movements. Dave received his master's degree and Ph.D. at Harvard and taught at Dartmouth for one year before joining the Cornell faculty in 1954. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1958-59 and is now teaching in India on a Fulbright grant. An earlier book was "Homicide in American Fiction, 1798-1860."
Jim Nye was coach of a winning sextet during the recent hockey season, guiding the Westboro Independent Hockey Club of the Worcester County (Mass.) Independent Hockey League to the league championship. It was a club composed of 19 high school age players, sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club.
Another winner is Washington attorney Wilmer B. Hill - or should I say he's taking on a rewarding assignment by becoming engaged to Joan Carol Brunelle of Ludlow, Mass. A June 24 wedding is planned. Bill is associated with Ames, Hill and Ames in the nation's capital; Joan, an American International College graduate, is with the District of Columbia Public Library system. Welcome to the Class of '50 tribe, Joan!

Now to swipe a few more items from Minute Messages sent to Joe Medlicott. The Phil Chamberlins of Santa Barbara, Calif., and their five children would like to swap their home near the Pacific Ocean for a week or so this summer with someone possessing a mountain country ranch in the western third of the nation. The best we can do at the moment, Phil, is to advise that Charlie Abbe has an 80-acre farm in Danbury, N. H., near Ragged Mountain which is available for summer or fall rental. SO' why not work out a deal to come back to good old New England? Charlie's address is Box 250. R.F.D. 2, Manchester, N. H.
A first-class investment man looking tor a challenging and rewarding position should get in touch with Bob Kilmarx at the Industrial National Bank of Rhode Island, in Providence. Sounds like a great spot for an experienced financial man who could head the Investment Advisory Account Division of this major New England bank. An additional point to stress is that there are great recreational opportunities in the area, especially sailing, as Jack Elliott can vouch for. Jack and Bob account for six boats between them, and other '50's in the area such as Sandy McCulloch also are saltwater enthusiasts in the summer while in the winter it is but a short drive up fine new highways to excellent ski areas.
