By the time this gets to you, the joy and the heartbreak that are Valentine's Day will be over. One thing that's only beginning, though, is the 1977 Alumni Fund drive. This year is a reunion year for the Class of 1972. The College needs a special effort from reunion classes in both the participation and dollar total categories. In June, 'a large number of us will gather in Hanover to catch up on the past five years. The College has managed to struggle on without us, but as is the story with any private institution, the cost is prohibitive. All of you will be contacted by 1972 Alumni Fund agents in the near future. This is the last appeal you'll have from me, since I have only four more columns to write, and I appeal to you to contribute generously.

Shel Prentice, finishing up at Fordham Law, is engaged to Barbara Mayzik, also a Fordham Law student. An August wedding, following the bar exam, is planned, after which Shel will become an associate in a large NYC law firm. Shel was my roommate for all four years at Dartmouth, and I wish him my best. Doug"Claghorn" Charlton says that regular reading of my column has helped his irregularity and has helped to shrink his nasal hemorrhoids. Clag is still finishing his dissertation in geology at Santa Barbara, and is teaching there as well. He, too, is getting married this summer. The future Mrs. Claghorn is a lady with visions of law school. Pete Easton's no longer thinking about it, he married Sue Keegan on October 2 in Wellesley. They live on four and one half acres in Canaan, N.Y., and have purchased a pickup truck so they wouldn't be the only couple on the block without one.

Mike Brownstein has returned from molesting the fauna in Alaska to work on his Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Washington. Dave Chatel is finishing up his masters in anthropology at Brown, and will then return to his job with the Rhode Island Heart Association. Doug North is working on a Ph.D. in regional planning at UMass, and is now married to Chris Ramsey (Vassar '73). Dwight Sargent is the proprietor of a company in Norwich, Vt., which manufactures butcher-block and contemporary furniture. He has just opened a second store in Burlington, Vt.

Don Fennessy is a fighter pilot Navy Lieutenant, whose most recent success was the bombing of himself in a Manila bar. Actually, Don is a member of Attack Squadron 27, driving an A-7E Corsair. Charlie Nearburg is in Dallas working as a marketing and sales engineer for a corporation engaged in the manufacture of energy recovery equipment. He is still racing sports cars (Can-Am) on the circuit, messing around with a lady architect, and playing squash. Bill Downell is teaching third grade in Enfield, N.H. Mike Meehan saw the light as a sales trainer for Bausch & Lomb in Rochester, N.Y. Bob Doyel is finishing a master's program in environmental management at Duke, and hopes to land a job in his chosen field near the school his wife Trudy chooses for her master's work in public administration. Bob Kirkpatrick has been promoted to the position of media supervisor for a Chicago advertising agency. Paul Oostenbrug is working on a planning degree at U. North Carolina, and is working part-time in a health planning agency. Bob Paul and Vince Bradford are both at Georgetown Law, and have both been named to the staff of the Georgetown Law Journal. Rick Greenberg is doing his internship in Detroit which he indicates is even more fun than Newark! Rick"Boomer" Buschatzke has started his med school career at Albany Med, and finds it "great to leave the real world and be in school again. Tom Kendall and spouse Nancy are expecting child number two in May and Tom is still selling accounting systems in Maine. Doug Ward is working at Cornell Med School in NYC since returning from Africa and the Peace Corps. He is presently applying to med schools, with an eye on being the oldest member of the Class of '72 to finish his education.

Pete Rufleth dropped a line to tell us that he did not pass on to his reward after med school but, rather, was spirited away by the U.S. Navy, and is now stationed at Camp Lejeune. NealeDuffett is also a Navy man, and he is spending a year's assignment in the British West Indies. Lynn Rowe is still happily ensconced in Big Sky country around Great Falls, Mont. He still does some singing and finds time to fish those cold Montana "cricks." Paul Malloy and wife Eileen are planning the end of the Navy Experience, with Paul intending to go on in his major field of psychology. Allen Pattee writes that daughter Bethany is responsible for much of the excitement and happiness he and his wife Terri exnerience. He concedes that the NYC rat race leaves something to be desired, and can't wait for the June reunion so he can trade his coal dust for some fresh New Hampshire air. Norm Cohen, the polar bears' friend, is still working for Alaska Legal Services, but now has Russ Williams with him to sing "Men of Dartmouth." Russ is a doctor in a Bethel, Alaska hospital. Norm noted that since it was above zero, he'd celebrate and drop the Class a line.

Ghort has busied himself with selection of valentines for the past few weeks. He's leaning toward one with a rather tender sentiment: "Tired of the same old grind? Get in gear and be my Valentine."
