Good Lord, where does the time go? That wonderful reunion is now history with all the previous ones, summer has slipped away, and here we are looking forward to football season, falling leaves, cold weather - and that "crunch of feet on snow"?? Good Lord!
Better back to June! We worked the fund telethon circuit and talked to guys who had hoped to make reunion but for various reasons were not there. (Note the alphabetical order.)
Dot and Ernie April. Not only did Ernie have a temporary physical problem, but also then had a daughter getting married. Being a school teaching person, he suffered the interference of weather with graduation, and it all came together with having to miss reunion. He's okay but very disappointed.
Ky Ayoob, night editor of the Bangor News, is so tied down he could not conceive of leaving his post. Did appreciate, however, old buddy StuNaramore's calling him from California with regard to the fund and found it good to talk with him.
Dex Branch is the typical dedicated M.D. (radiologist) who works, works, works - plays golf and takes an occasional visit to see one of their three children in Florida, California, and Arizona. Other than that he works. Brother Forest '33 just retired after 39 years as football coach and athletic director at the Hanover High School. Dex had hoped for reunion to see fellow medics Milne and Moister. Maybe next time.
Other tie-downs to academia and graduation interference were Claire and Ed Casey. Ed is vice principal of Natick Junior High, and June is busy season. He was also sick about missing out, as it has happened before.
Albie Chester was on vacation somewhere. His business had slowed down very much over the past few years, but he says it is now making a recovery.
Bob DeVarney retired after 30 years with Carpenter Technology (steel). That was eight years ago, and he got bored doing nothing, so took up teaching social studies and economics at Shelton High in Connecticut. For some reason he got turned off a bit at either our 15th or 20th and has not come to subsequent reunions. Bob, you would have thoroughly enjoyed this last one - ask anyone who was there.
Wol Gaines's youngest son got married, so he missed it. Told us John Osbourne called him on the Fund and planned to come visit. (We would like to hear about it if it happened.) Wol continues in retirement from the Maine State Police, teaching law enforcement technology at Southern Maine Vocational Institute.
Howie Longley, always a reunion attender, was in limbo. Retiring from G.E. in December, he has sold his home in Burlington, auctioned off all household effects, and meantime has bought a mobile home in Largo, Fla. (Lincolnshire Mobile Home Park, 1071 Donegan Road 33541). They mave next January. His daughter elected to be married reunion weekend! Only redeeming feature for him was a post-reunion visit from Jo and Fred Ingersoll, who filled him in on everything.
Another Vermont retiree is Jack Lovely, last December. With help and advice from his builder son, they are putting up a home at 66 Deerfield Road, Hilton Head, S.C. 29928. Back in Springfield, Sally continues to teach and to hope to sell their home in order to balance income with outgo. At time of our phone call they planned to move by Christmas. Kindly note the above two changes of address in the directory.
Milton Marsh has the unique problem of being in the gift shop business. They pour out the money for inventory in the spring and have to be minding the store for the summer trade to get their bait back. June is the start of their busy four-month season. For any visitors to Cape Cod, they are on the main road in Harwichport (right in town), the Port-o-Call Gift Shop. Ginny and Stu Richardson are both retired from teaching in Freeport, Me., where both are heavily involved in volunteer work with local activities and claimed no extra funds for reunion.
Brad Varnum's situation is practically a duplicate of Dex Branch's. Says he has no news, too involved with medicine, and only wished he had time to come back.
We will finish the alphabet next month and get on to news of folks who were there. What a secretary's delight a reunion and a telethon are!
