For whatever small comfort it may be, Dartmouth students face next year the smallest increase in tuition and other charges in the past several years. Tuition will be up $300 to $4,530, slightly over seven per cent. The total average bill for tuition, room and board for fall, winter, and spring terms in the academic year 1977-78 will be $6,640, up $416 or 6.7 per cent over the current year. In recent years, fee increases have been running close to ten per cent. The increase compares favorably with those of other Ivy League schools.
The picture is somewhat complicated by the fact that starting with the 1977 summer term when Dick's House reverts from accredited hospital to infirmary status, students will be required to carry comprehensive health insurance. Although no large-scale surveys have been conducted, estimates of the number of students already covered by their families' plans run as high as 80 per cent. Those who are not will have to pay probably $100-120 for a plan arranged by the College.
