I thought that I would begin this month's column with some updated news. Charles M.Johnson indicated at the Harvard-Dartmouth game in October that he and his wife were expecting their first child this winter. I am happy to report that said child arrived on January 22 and has been named Amy Elizabeth. At last report mother Susan Elizabeth — a '73 Mary Hitchcock and '75 University of Pennsylvania graduate — and daughter were doing just fine. Charley continues to work for Westinghouse in the credit department at the Pittsburgh head-quarters.
Some months ago I reported on the activities of classmates who had been able to settle in the Hanover area. As you may recall. Gene Nelson was involved in an interesting community medicine program at the Dartmouth Med School. The latest news is that Gene has been appointed coordinator of Community Consultative Services and an assistant professor in the department of community medicine at the school. He will be teaching epidemiology, health administration and health education.
A recent column included a story about BillSharkey, who had been inducted into the ways of the actuarial profession. After serving in various actuarial posts at Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., Bill was named actuarial assistant in 1974 and in August 1976 was promoted to senior actuarial assistant in the corporate actuarial department. Since then, Bill has been designated a fellow of the Society of Actuaries.
Congratulations are also due to Tim Frawley who is living in Sacramento, Calif., and has passed the California bar exam, one of the toughest such exams in the country. A notation in this year's annual Dartmouth AnthropologyNotes indicates that Rod and Patsy Thomas are the proud parents of a daughter, Amy Elizabeth born on March 29, 1975. The Thomases are living in Stafford, Vt., near Rod's job as a counselor in the Hartford, Vt., school system Mark Harris has been appointed to teach mathematics at Holyoke Community College Mark was a math major at Dartmouth and received a master's degree in math from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst Finally, I think congratulations are also in order for Rich Bambino who has found a way to make medical school all the more interesting, namely, by attending a med school in Paris.
Speaking of medicine, I have a report that Brian Sweeney is currently in the last year of his internal medicine residency in San Diego, I believe, at the Navy Hospital there. Brian is married and has two. sons — Brian Jr., now 8, and Jeff 6. Brian and family may well be back east next summer, possibly settling in the Rhode Island area. Currently enjoying Rhode Island is John Morse who has been serving with the Navy. John reports that he is now married and is making plans for a family and an M.B.A. during the course of his assignment to the staff of the Naval War College in Newport. Friends are advised that the waters off Newport are great for diving, sailing, and swimming.
Joel Milne wrote to bring us up to date as to his activities since graduation. Joel has been married since 1970 and lives in Hopkinsville, Ky., with wife Pat and a daughter Lauren. Also settled with the Milnes is a golden retriever, one Jake, described by Joel as another Hanover transplant. After mastering Western Kentucky University's course in business administration, Joel is now an account manager for financial systems, NCR Corp. Over the border in Ohio are Dave and Susan Wadleigh. Dave reports that he and his wife are in their fourth year of raising sheep on a farm in the southeastern part of the state. Dave adds that Appalachia suits them well and says he has also been teaching math for grades five through eight at a school near the farm. Finally, Eric Derrickson wrote to let his friends know that he is back at school, going for a master's degree in law and diplomacy at the Fletcher School and that he finds the time, energy, and money tied up in graduate studies devastating. He adds that it reminds him of running the gauntlet. Well, Eric, there are days when I would subscribe to that. If any of you are already involved in Third World development studies, Eric would enjoy comparing notes with with you. And, speaking of notes, how about a few?
