April 1977 JOHN D. BURKE, DAVID J. FRIEND

By the time you read this, you will have already missed my birthday, but belated cards and gifts will be graciously accepted. I have just returned from a cruise of the sunny Caribbean, where I debauched for a week with Dave Sloper '6O and his wife Linda, among others. The wine, women and song must have agreed with me, since I haven't developed a sour stomach, a rash, or laryngitis.

The word from Steve Tozer was that he got together with Sandy Mackie, Hank Menzel,David Bauer and John Bartlett for the 8th Annual Ho Chi Minh Memorial New Year's Party. The site this year was Dallas, where John Connally was appropriately flying at half-mast. Jimand Linda McNally are also in Dallas, where Jim is in his first year of residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital, specializing in anesthesiology. Jay Worthen has joined a law firm in Keene, N.H., after proving (despite his Bones Gate background) that he could pass a bar! Jay is planning to wed Cindy Lord in Hanover in October. The wedding party(?) will consist of John Nelson, Jack Smith, PeteAreson, Dr. Don Eberly and Dr. "Ratso"Greenberg (I wonder if the AMA calls him that?).

Young Dawkins is currently the editor of the Hilton Head (S.C.) Quarterly which is about to publish its first issue. Young admits that the birth of a new publication is an experience in organization for which no one is ever totally prepared. Chris Cain and Pambi have moved to San Francisco, where Chris is employed by Bechtel Corporation. Chris didn't mention what exactly it is that he's doing, but his letter came through on a Bechtel calculation sheet! PaulLausell has moved with his wife and two sons to Puerto Rico, where he is employed by a marketing research firm, proving once again that an M.8.A., even from Harvard, can help you find sunshine. Steve Sulzer is still at Wildcat Academy as academic director. He is an initiate of the Spiritual Path "Eckankar," which is a new path to this religion major. God knows, I walked several of those paths myself, and I hope this one is the right one for Steve.

Jon Einsidler has spent much of his winter cross-country skiing in Central Park, trying to figure out what his job title, manager of special products for an NYC corporation, really means. Steve Himmelman and Mike Brownstein have formed a picture-frame corporation in Seattle which has begun to boom, despite the fact that Steve dated his letter Jan. 26, 1976! I know those two well enough to know that a year one way or the other won't be any big deal. John"Cadillac Jack" Chambers writes that he is living in San Diego and is a general contractor, building homes in that area. Jack has finished his four-year apprenticeship, has received his contractor's license, and intends to remain single and drink an occasional beer in the San Diego area for some time to come.

Loan payback time has come around for BillThorwarth, and since he and wife Randi would like to take daughter Shane (14 months) out of the Hershey windbowl anyway, he's contemplating some emergency room work for a year. Glen "Woody" Hodgson and wife Diane are located in Minot, N.D., where he is a civil engineer with the U.S. Public Health Service. Woody designs and constructs water-supply and waste-disposal systems on Indian reservations. It's apparently not a full-time job, since Woody and Linda (in particular) are expecting their first child in May.

Jim and Krasna Harris are the proud parents of Alissa, born last July 11. He is still a free-lance writer/photographer, and has been hired as a consultant by the State of Oregon to study the impact of a 500 KV power line on migrating waterfowl.

Andy Cassel writes that he has taken a job writing editorials for the Charlotte (N.C.) News, after leaving a similar position with the Patriot Ledger, a Boston publication. He points out that he's doing essentially what he did at Dartmouth, but now he's getting paid for it. Mike Gracey has made considerable progress since his 1973 accident. His mother writes: "He tells me everything by blinking the alphabet and nodding 'yes' or 'no'." Mrs. Gracey asked me to convey her apologies to Mike's many friends whom she hasn't had the chance to contact. His progress is slow but steady, and through his Mom, Mike writes, "Many thanks to all of you who have sent letters, notes and cards the past few years. Sorry I couldn't answer them since my mom gets bogged down traveling back and forth to the hospital, but I DO appreciate them very much. It's great to be remembered by your friends." It would seem to this humble scribe that it is our part to keep those cards and letters coming, as well as to stop and visit if any of us find ourselves in the general vicinity of Tichy Drive, Box 122, Mount Holly Springs, Pa. 17065.

Ghort views this news as very good because he and I both considered Mike to be one of our best friends, even though he roots for the Pirates. Ghort at the moment is in Frodo's Dog House after getting one of my date's dresses, and totally consuming it. That combined with my "saver" comment, "Some women are more attractive with their clothes on!" sealed my fate. Ah, the single life....
