We have news through the "Billboard" editor that Bishop Brown is safe in his home in Durban, South Africa, 500 miles from Rhodesia and 1000 miles from Uganda. In both countries, evolution marked by strife is taking place. The latest from Hap Wanner tells of his daily routine of cooking, housework, and the entire care of Billy, his invalid wife.
Dutch Waterbury reminds us that the 1977 Alumni Fund campaign is on with a goal of 4.6 million dollars. Last year our class contributed $5,390, which included a goodly sum in memorial gifts. As our members steadily diminish in numbers, the gifts by widows and other relatives become of ever-increasing importance.
Herbert Lombard spent most of January in the hospital for surgery but now reports feeling fine. He was honored by the editor of a cancer magazine with his picture on the cover of the March issue, together with a brief survey of his work in cancer research. He reports that his daughter's book on biostatics has been well-received, which is gratifying to both.
Elizabeth Park has recovered from her ills and is now all set to work for the 1977 Alumni Fund. She continues to drive - not too far from home - and keeps in touch with her physicians at the Exeter Hospital Clinic. From BillShapleigh's sister, Helen Lowell, comes news that Dorothy has been ill. No details supplied. Dorothy has already evinced evidence of her loyalty to her husband's college with a gift to the 1977 memorial fund, one of the first from 1912. We trust she will be able to join us at our 65th.
Joe Boylan's widow May keeps going, though not far afield. She continues to enjoy a good game of bridge. Most of her letter told of JimmySteen's confining illness with its many complications, in and out of the hospital and a nursing home, as Carola was unable to cope with it all alone. Jimmy died on April 2. The sympathy of all the 29 remaining members of 1912 goes out to Carola and the family.
Lucy Bugbee sends us the cheering news that she will be on hand at the Hanover Inn for our 65th in June. This is all the more pleasing as Lucy has now recovered from two disabling fractures. Jo Adams may have burned her Florida bridges but she apparently found the weather in Derry too tough this winter and so took off in January for an apartment in Winter Haven, Fla. We all look forward to seeing her in June.
