"And what is so rare as a day in June?" The trees and the flowers are just as beautiful as when Lowell wrote. That is the best news we can give you. By the time you read this, our 65th reunion, the last of the kind, will be a matter of history. Much of the correspondence the past month has been related to the reunion and to the Alumni Fund campaign. The latter is still in progress, and we remind you how much the College needs the help of each one of us.
A letter from Hanover over the signature of Elizabeth Park, chairperson of the 1912 widows, has gone out in support of gifts to the Memorial Fund. We are justly proud of all that our widows have done in the past. Elizabeth writes of her spring exercise raking leaves, also of a trip with friends to Plymouth and Cape Cod.
A very cheerful note was received in April from Guy Lewis' widow Frances in San Antonio, Texas. She never fails to remember her husband, his twin brother Roy, and our renowned classmate Lyme Armes with gifts each year to the Memorial Fund. Frances has sold her home and is now living in her duplex to eliminate the care of two places. She made a recent trip to Maryland to bring her mother's sister to join them in San Antonio and thus brighten her mother's life. She was with us in spirit at the reunion.
A letter arrived recently from Shaw Newton's widow Norma, telling us she prizes every note, notice, and news she receives from Dartmouth. The secretary has been informed that her name has just been dropped from the list. Financial difficulties seem to be the underlying cause for Norma's apparent loss of interest. We need the support of all our widows and will do our part to maintain it.
Dutch Waterbury has been busy arranging with Quech for the reunion and filling in as bequest chairman since Jim Oneal's resignation last year; he is also working with Joe Doe for the Alumni Fund campaign. Edith and Dutch planned to return to Egg Harbor, Wis., the last week in May.
We are now down to a count in the low twenties, but the old spirit is very much alive.
