John E. Hanson '59, dean of Linfield College in Oregon, will the first of July become Dartmouth's first dean of students.

The office was created as part of a chain reaction following the decision of Frank Smallwood '51 to return to full-time teaching after two years as vice president for student affairs. At their winter meeting, the Trustees voted to abolish the student affairs vice presidency and assign the policy-level responsibilities of that office to Ralph Manuel '58, dean of the College. The new position was established to take over many of Manuel's former duties, with a special responsibility for upperclassmen - paralleling the freshman dean's relationship with first-year students.

An English major at Dartmouth, Hanson earned both his master's degree in counselling and guidance and his doctorate in education at the University of Oregon. He has been in student personnel work at UCLA, Stanford, and the University of Oregon. This past academic year he has been on sabbatical leave from Linfield as a visiting scholar at Stanford.
