In the recent balloting for Alumni Trustee, George Munroe '43, with 83 per cent of the vote, was a clear winner over the Reverend Pauli Murray. A surprising number of alumni, 35 per cent of those eligible, voted in the contest between Munroe, chairman of Phelps Dodge Corporation, and Murray, who was given an honorary degree by Dartmouth last June.

Munroe was the candidate nominated by the Alumni Council in December. Murray's candidacy was proposed by petition by an independent group of alumni.

The dimension of the response was surprising in that, according to Secretary of the College J. Michael McGean '49, institutions which normally nominate trustees through a balloting procedure generally expect from 18 to 20 per cent participation. Dartmouth had no precedent to draw on, since this year marked the first time that the Alumni Council's nominee has been challenged.

The results of the balloting - 10,764 votes for Munroe and 2,232 for Murray - were forwarded to President Kemeny and Board Chairman F. William Andres '29. At their June meeting, the Trustees elected Munroe to replace Andres whose term expired directly after Commencement.
