I don't particularly like to start off the year thinking of our Class in monetary terms, but with the resounding response to the Alumni Fund still ringing in my ears since last June, I have to begin with some mention of our outstanding performance. Our class giving was 144.8 per cent of a tough objective, and for the first time we were number one in our Green Derby grouping (we've been tail-end-charley in this department for about 25 out of the last 33 years). It was a great giving response on the part of a lot of individuals and special credit should be given to Jim Lynch and his agents for an obviously super effort.
It's been a good summer in Hanover. The weather has been excellent and the place has been a buzz of cultural, academic, athletic, and you-name-it activities. One of the highlights of the fast moving summer was Alumni College with over 300 alumni and guests on campus for a full two-week program. Back from '46 were Frank and Mary Carleton of Millville, N.J., Dr. Fred and Rita Eadie of Norwich, Conn., and Rev. Don and Mary Lou Fitzsimmons of Hingham, Mass. From all reports it was its usual interesting and stimulating experience.
We had an opportunity to journey out to Ohio this summer for a family wedding and were able to spend a good bit of a fun weekend with Dr. Nick and Ellen Vorys. They have just moved out of Columbus, where Nick has his practice, to nearby Gahanna. This is a big change from city to country surroundings and they are obviously pleased with the move. Nick is in ob-gyn and has become one of the world's foremost medicos in the field of fertility and birth control. Son George '74 is at law school, Fred '79 in Hanover for his last year, and daughter Ann, following her father's footsteps, has just entered Jefferson Medical School where Nick also got his basic training.
Word came early in the summer from the Department of the Army of the promotion of Richard G. Trefry to lieutenant general and his assignment as the inspector general of the United States Army. Dick started at Dartmouth during World War II, finished up at West Point in 1950, and prior to this promotion served in Greenland, Europe, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos. He and his wife Jacquelyn now live in Clifton, Va. Carl Hagelin has been elected president of the Association for Corporate Growth. Carl is a vice president for American Appraisal Co. in Stamford, Conn., and has been active nearly 25 years in the appraisal industry with special emphasis on mergers and acquisitions. He and his wife Mary live in nearby Southport.
Sanford M. Treat Jr. has been named executive vice president of Alcan Sheet and Plate, the largest operating division of Alcan Aluminum Corporation, located in Cleveland, Ohio. Sandy joined Alcan in 1950 and has worked in various sales and management capacities in Canada, Venezuela, and the United States, and is now living in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Robinson Smith was re-elected to the executive board of the Masterworks Chorale. The chorus is widely known for its colorful music festivals, its performances with the Boston Ballet, and its very popular free concerts of major choral orchestra works. Robbie is an assistant professor of American studies at Bently College in Waltham, Mass. He and his wife Joan also live in Waltham.
We hope we will be seeing many of you back in Hanover this fall during one or more of the coming football weekends. I can't really predict the Green's prowess in the field this year but I can say I am impressed with our new coach Joe Yakica. He seems to be the kind of coach one would go the extra yard for, and I also suspect he will offer up a more exciting brand of football. So come on up and especially sign up for the Yale game on October 14. Bob and JackieKimball will provide their usual hospitality with mini-reunion headquarters before the game and there will be a class dinner after the game at Reg and Nancy Pierces' in Etna. Hope to see many of you then.
